A customer has requested that I make a very large table. My question is that the top will be 5/4 ash approx 5.5 wide by 8 ft long .
For your tabletop there is nothing wrong with TB3 as your adhesive.
If you are able to to prepare your edges properly the addition of biscuits
My next question is, why to you see or feel the need to butt join your boards to achieve the 8' length needed for the top?
Do the top out of full length boards.
As long as the boards are of low MC and when the top is attached to the frame it is secured in a manner to allow for seasonal movement something that wide will work.
My 2 cents,
When I have to glue up a big top like this, I tongue and groove the boards on the shaper, and because Iím gonna my to leave the top clamped up overnight, I use epoxy to glue up. I find the tongue and groove makes all the boards line up near perfect, and I donít have to worry about a board slipping up or down with clamp pressure.
Thank you both Mark and Matt for your responses. The table in question is 16 feet long. I have to make it two halfs to get it to the customers house. I can do the top in all 8 footers, but I don't want a seam down the middle.
