aluminum to styrofoam bonding
6/1/19
Can someone direct me to the correct adhesive to use. I am wanting to sandwich bond thin sheet aluminum to a poly expanded styrofoam (1.5 thick) and a wood veneer. It will be laid up on 48 x 96 sheets and then put into the joos hot press. Ideally I would like either a trowellable product or a spray that could be activated quickly once put into the press for short cycle times. It wll be an exterior use application but not sure if this will matter because it won't ever contact uv or water because its sandwiched in the layers, it will however see fairly extreme temperature changes.
Thank to all that have helpful input

Doenst really speak to your hot press but the only thing that we have had success with for exterior that is relatively fast is polyurethane. We bond various skins over XPS and have tried PL's foam adhesives and various other concoctions but our best success has been with PU. We spread it with either plastic or metal fine notch spreaders that we take over to the edge sander and knock the notches down until they are very fine. The standard 1/16" notch trowels we have found leave way to much material. We trowel out on the hard surface so the XPS doesnt scrape off and plug up the notches.
Its not the fastest in that we still have to clamp for 30-45 but Ive left panels out by the dumpster for weeks and they still hold up.
