Edgebander not giving good results - only on particle core...

I have a lower end edgebander, which I asked some questions about on here a month or so ago. Thank you for all of the answers, they were very helpful.

I have been banding veneer core and MDF sheets since then with no problems, good performance from the bander. Doing a pull test, I pretty much have to wrap the banding around my hand to get it to pull off.

I have my first particle core job coming up (since getting the bander), and did some tests. I am not getting what I would call great results. Sure, it adheres, but once I get something dug under one end (a fingernail or screwdriver), I can pull it off fairly easily.

Any suggestions? I am using the same table saw to cut the PC sheets as the VC/MDF sheets. Brand new, good quality melamine blade. The bander is set to the same temp...

The bander has a glue flow control, to control how much goes on the band. Should I turn it up? I am reluctant to turn it up too much, lest I just end up making a giant mess.

Is this just the quality of adhesion I should expect with PC sheets on a cheaper edgebander?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks,

Bill

I would increase your glue flow until your bander begins to stop being able to clean it up then back it down a hair. PB core, depending on the brand/quality, can be very porous. The bulk of your glue is likely getting lost in the pores.

You may well be under-gluing the other material as well if you can pull it off by hand (even with the wrapping). We cant pull banding off period when it comes out of the machine. Your only hope is to skin it off with a very sharp chisel or to use heat.

Thanks Mark,

Maybe I've been doing this wrong... how long should I be waiting to do the pull test?

I just read a Knowledge Base article from years ago (someone having similar issues), where someone talked about waiting before doing the pull test.

Another KB article referred to panel temps... what sort of temperature should I be keeping the panels at? The temperature in the shop is around 12-15c. I have tried turning the gluepot all the way up to the upper limit of the glue specs. It just results in the glue ending up stringy...

Have a look at the edge banding after you pull it off. How much wood fibre is stuck in the glue? Is the banding completely covered with a thin and consistent glue film?
My experience with banding cold panels (12°C) is that the glue pulls off the substrate in thick patches leaving bare particle core.
When things are going right for me the banding pulls particles off the core. At this point it would seem to be the core failing not the the banding bond. It does pull off way easier than other substrates.
I keep my shop cool in the winter at 15-20° and I am happy with the bond I'm getting without warming my panels.

For me personally I wouldn't be so concerned with glue temp as I would quantity. I will try again tomorrow but I honestly cant strip PVC or wood banding off by hand. It tears off in long shards. I couldn't re band a piece without taking it to the bench as shearing the banding off with a sharp chisel and even that's a chore.

Do you have a heater on the fence of your edgebander or a heat lamp prior to or just after the glue roller? The temperature in your shop is borderline and the glue may be cooling down too much before the panel reaches the first pressure roller. This will cause poor adhesion. If the glue is very smooth on the board and you don't see the knurl marks of the roller when you pull the edgebanding off then the glue is cooling too quickly before it reaches the first pressure roller.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
