What's your point?

Free trade is a straw man argument, a free trade agreement should only take a few sentences, something like: I will freely trade with all nations. Not thousands of pages.

Iran is another straw man argument to keep the military industrial complex gainfully employed.

Re the robot thing, they said the same thing when the majority of the country were farmers, they then went to work in factories, today what 2% are farmers. Jobs will be created in new fields, 30yr ago I'm guessing more than half of today's jobs didn't exist.

The really scary thing is that investment in business has been on the decline for decades and is a fraction of what is was. As Econ 101 showed us that is vital to creating new jobs. And that is the source of the real problem, actually what is causing that is the real problem.

I've been criticized by my liberal acquaintances for utilizing computers for everything from design to machining to accounting. "I'm stealing jobs!" So are many of you on this site! Don't you feel bad?
In-spite of my job destruction, I find it hard to find decent new employees. Currently looking. The education level of most that apply is low. Those that have graduated from high school, lack life skills. Communication: horrible language capabilities, un-readable printing. Can't add 2 & 2 let along basic trig (3,4,5!). Any idea what metric is, nope. Money management, joke!
So I have to engage in teaching 7th grade level classes, bit by bit. It isn't a matter of ultimately poor pay. We live in a cheap part of the country, about 1/2 of my guys earn $23+/hr. get some benefits and assorted perks. New hires advance based on what they are capable of.
I've got a great group of long term employees, but adding to them..... Rant over.

I didn't post this as a rant against "the machine" but rather as a simple observation that made me ask "what does this mean to me?"

This article made me think about how marketing has changed in my industry. A million years ago when Al Gore and I used to have coffee together we would postulate this thing called the inter web. We reasoned that there would eventually be some kind of key word search so I used three important keywords in my company name.

This worked for a very long time. No matter how you put those key words together I am on the top of every google search. That, in combination with better than average photography, worked really well for me.

Until it didn't.

The world found a different watering hole so my customers don't come so much from google anymore. Great photography on Houzz used to work but now everybody has great photography. In my corner of the woods there are now 130 photographers you can hire. Everybody with a DSLR has learned how to light a photograph.

A customer of mine in San Francisco recently lamented the influx of tech workers and the impact this was having on Victorian era houses such as hers. She used to have a local Re-Use store to shop at when looking for old windows, doors or moldings. That store recently closed because the new demographic of worker wants modern cabinet styles not old.

As these tech workers come to town and bid up the price of housing this will change the products we should produce. General Electric sold it's financial division to a company that last year bought 50,000 residential rental properties. When you have to compete with Wall Street to buy your first house it's gonna be tough. Trying to sell a bean counter an upgraded kitchen is also going to be tough.

Reading the NY Times usually gives me a lot to think about. Whenever I don't read it I feel like I am missing something I probably need to know.

Speaking of NY Times articles, I sure miss Paul Down's blog.

How is the book coming Paul?
When will it be published?

Paul Downs

@JWS: book is on its way, publication date is August 4th. If the mods here will let me, I'll make a post announcing its availability. Also, I'm speaking at the Las Vegas show on Friday 7/24 - I would be delighted to meet any of the Woodweb crowd.

As for regular blogging, I've been taking a breather but will probably resume in the summer. Not sure where I'll be hanging my hat, though. Not the Times, anyway. Most likely it will be on Forbes.com. I'll let you all know when it happens.

Thanks for asking!

You sound like a frustrated writer?

I think it is natural to readers of the Grey Lady. Because it tells such good stories, especially regarding economics especially from Paul Krugman, he is the best story teller around.

Anyway buck up the only constant is change and change creates opportunity.

Paul, yes, you can go ahead and post an announcement when the book is available.

I was thinking about this. I recently searched a whole lot about trends in marketing and they seem to point to online presence of the cerebral sort.

Things like e letters, blogging, videos, etc. Things to create a name for information searchers, and online chanel surfers.

I guess internet use has evolved. Come to think about it, I don't use the internet the same way I did 10 years ago. It has for sure replaced TV and often even books.

Outputting pro information that gets passed along can't be detrimental. And I'm sure Paul Downs gets business for being Paul Downs (and being generally very awesome).

FORUM GUIDELINES: Please review the guidelines below before posting at WOODWEB's Interactive Message Boards (return to top)

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.
  • Participants are encouraged to use their real name when posting. Intentionally using another persons name is prohibited, and posts of this nature will be removed at WOODWEB's discretion.
  • Comments, questions, or criticisms regarding Forum policies should be directed to WOODWEB's Systems Administrator
    (return to top).

Carefully review your message before clicking on the "Send Message" button - you will not be able to revise the message once it has been sent.

You will be notified of responses to the message(s) you posted via email. Be sure to enter your email address correctly.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).

The staff of WOODWEB assume no responsibility for the accuracy, content, or outcome of any posting transmitted at WOODWEB's Message Boards. Participants should undertake the use of machinery, materials and methods discussed at WOODWEB's Message Boards after considerate evaluation, and at their own risk. WOODWEB reserves the right to delete any messages it deems inappropriate. (return to top)
