Booking production hours.8/25
Several project managers. House ERP. Projects ran, data collected. Yet no formal booking of production from project managers.
I think it's not that far of a leap to make to from data, plans, experience-based prediction, to booking.
I've seen this managed several ways--you can hire a production manager to punch this all in. Or project coordinator. Or ask the project managers to do it. On way or another, it starts with ERP, then with procedure.
Anyone here experienced with project based production booking in a large firm?
Seriously ? Are you guys bidding with no hours thrown out on the jobs ? Are you saying that you are nbot scheduling for materials reception and then for production runs for assembly ?
LOL--not that bad. "Total production hours" are scheduled for jobs. But I'm thinking a better step forward-- internal detailed production scheduling, not job scheduling.
For example--4 project manglers. (Oops! I mean managers!! ) 1 edge bander. 12 man hours available per day to run this thing. If each mangler knows how many hours of edge banding they will need, and what is available, and they share a booking schedule that can regulate this limited resource... then the bander doesn't get hit with ten projects at once. More predictable, more even flow.
I'm not saying scheduling productions predictions will always be bang on, but it's better then nothing, no? I've seen ERP that counts Everything. I know it gets done, and that anyone can do it really if you approach it right.
Maybe no one is interested, maybe no one knows. Anyhow, I have an update and it won't cost too much to add it.
Had a chat about this with someone in the know at the shop, and the counter argument is that the man hours to log this stuff is too great. And that ERP was impractical for capturing last minute/rush things.
It's a good argument but I'm not 100% convinced it was not an occasion of throwing away the baby with the bath water. New proceedures take time and need tweaking. And I personally would prefer to take the time towards planning then production...
That said what do I know! Just plain curious.
Mel. What you are talking about is scheduling for the edge bander. I do something along that lines with my cnc. As the work comes in, the time to run the jobs is logged onto each day on a calendar. Since we run it 12 hours a day, I use a scheduled time of 11 hours a day. This allows for problems (imagine that). When the day is full of work, the work flows into the next day and so on. When the operators come in, they know which job they are working on for that day. Sometimes we move the schedule around (schedule is in dry erase) when things invariably pop up that need to be moved to the front of the list.
I use on of those big monthly planning calendars posted by the production office. This way everyone is aware of what is being worked on and what is scheduled when.
Right on! I was wondering about this-- capture what you can, and make dealing with change a little more understandable. Physically seeing in advance what you push back for another I think is more powerful then a verbal changes in action plans.
