Used machinery from Europe4/16
I've seen a lot of good deals on used veneer equipment in Germany. Does anyone have any experience buying used from over seas? Anything to watch out for? Is the shipping outrageous?
I import equipment from Europe for our company so I offer some suggestions here. These may or may not be applicable to your particular equipment and method of purchase. Below are some of the main considerations for a smooth purchase and delivery:
1) Vendor Purchase costs: Are you paying in Euro or USD? What's the cost of the exchange along with bank fees? Any packing and crating fee?
2) Delivery: What's the term? Will you pick up? Or do they deliver to your forwarder somewhere in Europe? Or do they deliver to your door?
3) Importations: Who would be your broker? How do you pay for customs and duties? What's the cost of brokerage? Do you have a business to be applied to your books, hence you want to tell the seller to be sure to put your business name on the invoice? How much duty to be paid to the US Customs for the particular equipment being purchased?
4) Forwarder: What method of transportation do you prefer? Can your forwarder quote you ocean and air? Do they have a brokerage? Be sure to ask for a comprehensive fee schedule including any ISF, clean truck, and insurance. Ask for All-Risk Insurance if you want your shipment insured.
It can be a great experience. Discuss the purchase details with your seller. Acquire experienced forwarder and customs broker who are familiar with the type, size, and weight of your purchase. Having good quotes including detail freight, bank fees, and insurance will minimize any surprises later.
All the best.
Thank you Chris. Very useful information.
