i have a 4 man shop and the work is coming in fast and furious. i am also getting older and none of my present employees are good enough or smart enough to move into a supervisory position. finding it difficult to handle selling, takeoffs, site measurements and still keep control, plus i need to grow to bigger space within 3 months to handle more work. This is work from existing custom builders and designers that i have een working for many years and they have lots of projects going into 2020 and want me to be there supplier. I met an excellent installer just recently and used him on several jobs. he was able to install projects in half the time of my guys with no supervision. great head for details and an independant thinker that has run his own install comany for 10 years. He also has inside shop management capabilities that could take me to next level so i can fcus on sales and design.
Our sales this year were in the mid 700K range and i have been drawing 84K for myself and another 20-30K into IRA and simple IRA.
We are very sympatico and have same values and faith and i can also see this leading to either a partnership or eventual buyout. i am an extremely healthy 69 year old and he is 30 years younger.
Any advice on starting salary i should offer? this is a big leap or me. Thx,

Great employees are hard to come by. If he is really that good, pay him all you can and make sure it’s the top of the market for your area. It will be a great investment in your company

rich c.

Let him tell you what he wants for salary and benefits, then go from there.

Not sure you can afford to pay enough to bring someone in.

To answer your question I would think 100k maybe 75k because Fla has a much cheaper cost of living

Or consider a "work to own" option where he buys you out over time

agree with rich - let him name his price. he might understand the discount a lot of use would give up for a steady paycheck (without worry of sales, etc.). worst he can say is no.

have a serious conversation with him about buying you out in years to come.
you could prorate some sort of ownership if you like, or payable bonuses with achievement of x goals, but you don't need to give away the shop immediately (or enter a contract to do so). establishing some time-lines for the decisions to be laid out and agreed upon (or bonuses, etc.) will keep the deal on the up-and-up. plus, this will allow you an out if things don't according to plan. i think honest conversations don't happen enough, and he should appreciate your approach.

good luck.

I would be surprised if he would come to work with you. He is independent for a reason. He works alone and he gets paid per piece. If he is good, he can pick his jobs and he will take jobs that do not have a lot of detail. It is the details that eats up the time.

If you do not have a good office staff, I would look there. I have a guy in my office, who can do drawings, spread sheets, networking and if need be, help in the shop. I also have a designer on staff for sales and design. These are my two most valuable people.

I was going to mention what Paul is saying. If nothing else look at getting an assistant for you.

Have a few long talks with him before you commit. Try to determine attitude. Then ask him what he wants. As an independent he may not be happy giving that up.

I may well be wrong, and a lot of us in the self employed world even with the advent of spreadsheets and detailed accounting programs, delude ourselves into our own realities with regards to the fruits of self employment,... but... I have a hard time imagining any sane individual not considering nearly 100K a year in salary and benefits and the potential to be a part of, own, grow, a business that could achieve more, and have a 5 oclock and some semblance of a weekend.

But who knows.

As said, I'd just float it to him and see what comes of it. Doesnt sound like he's approached you looking, you are the one looking. He could either turn it down flat, or see it as an opportunity.

I'd guess in your market as nuts as FLA seems to be, some level compensation near your own would draw (sans 401K) would be the minimum to get a hook in the lip. I cant imagine bailing on my own work for lest that 75-100 a year minimum. Of course performance and bonus' could make up a bit of that.

From one expatriate Canadian to another I hope you've got the hatches battened down. Be safe.

FORUM GUIDELINES: Please review the guidelines below before posting at WOODWEB's Interactive Message Boards (return to top)

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.
  • Participants are encouraged to use their real name when posting. Intentionally using another persons name is prohibited, and posts of this nature will be removed at WOODWEB's discretion.
  • Comments, questions, or criticisms regarding Forum policies should be directed to WOODWEB's Systems Administrator
    (return to top).

Carefully review your message before clicking on the "Send Message" button - you will not be able to revise the message once it has been sent.

You will be notified of responses to the message(s) you posted via email. Be sure to enter your email address correctly.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).

The staff of WOODWEB assume no responsibility for the accuracy, content, or outcome of any posting transmitted at WOODWEB's Message Boards. Participants should undertake the use of machinery, materials and methods discussed at WOODWEB's Message Boards after considerate evaluation, and at their own risk. WOODWEB reserves the right to delete any messages it deems inappropriate. (return to top)
