edgebander issues

3/30/15
Kyle

We are a shop located outside of Philadelphia. Our facility is climate controlled pretty well throughout the year. We are currently using a KDN-210 Brandt edgebander. It gives us trouble with .5mm edgebanding. It continually tracks off the edge of the panel. Some species run pretty well like cherry and synthetic vinyl edges. Sapele and maple run with very poor results. Also when we are edgebanding veneer core plywood that may not be perfectly flat is causes very poor results. My first thought was that the quality of edgebanding just isn't quite good enough. We are currently buying our edgebanding from a company called edgeco. INC. Also this edgebander performs very poorly when trying to edge 3mm thick vinyl edges. We are to the point where we need a machine that can edgeband 3mm vinyl and 3mm wood rolls onto any substrate. We are ok with buying new or used. What machine would you recommend and any thoughts on our supplier for edgebanding would be appreciated.

Kyle,
If properly calibrated and maintained this machine should run .5mm edgebanding off all types with good results. When was the last time that you had a Stiles technician give it a maintenance? I know that it cost a bunch of money to have someone come in there but so does touching everything up by hand. As far a 3mm coiled material goes you are going to get mixed results off of this machine. The pressure zone is a little light for consistent 3mm work in my opinion. The likelihood that you are having quality issues from the coiled material are very small. Get the machine some maintenance and while the technician is there make sure that you fully understand how to operate it and have a good grasp on its capabilities.

All of your comments refer to materials and the machine. After operating four different edgebanders over 28 years, my experience is the most common problems are caused by the machine operator making adjustments not fully understood. Since you run a range of materials and thicknesses, I suspect the operator is making adjustments that are compounding the issues.

An experienced and knowledgeable technician needs to fully evaluate the machine to make sure their are no defective components. Then he needs to calibrate and document settings for various banding sizes and thicknesses as well as various materials and thicknesses. The operator(s) need to be trained to use these settings when making changeovers from one material to another. Banding thickness can and does vary from one roll to the next. I experienced this and learned it was a factor in edge quality.

I would then run a large job that uses the same materials and thicknesses to see if issues occur during the run. If so, I would suspect a machine problem still unfound. If none found, I might try another outside technician with fresh eyes. If no issues occur, then I would pay attention to the operators potential introducing issues intentionally or unintentionally.

Edgebanders do multiple simple processes precisely with a variety of materials and sizes. You have a quality machine that should have no problems when properly maintained and operated. Lack of understanding of the mechanics lead to problems.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
