Compressor keeps going off and having trouble locating leak

5/17/15
Mike

Here's pics of my set up i have an air dryer attached and i have a shut off valve at the output if the compressor. My airlines are all in black pipe. My compressor keeps going off, even though the shutoff valve is flipped off.

I did notice the brass tube, where it connects to the compressor was a biy loose "the compression nut", so i tightened that and then i went to tighten the two star headed screws that hold that assembly to the electrical box, just moving it a hair, i could hear air leaking there too. I tightened the screws and then took off the box cover to see how that assembly is attached to see how difficult it will be to replace and then i noticed when i screwed the cap back on, if i tightened it tio tight, it caused the air to leak from that side area. Any ideas on what could be causing it to leak or if i can even get parts. I went to Ereplacement parts and they dont even show it as a possibility to get parts. Im afraid ill need to call ingersol rand tomm. The compressor was bought brand new in 2012

Leaks are a real pain sometimes.
I've chased them several times.
A spray bottle of water with a little Dawn
dish soap added will show them better than
anything I've tried.Spray every joint and
watch for bubbles.
If you still can't find it, it may be the check
valve for the tank, some use a rubber ball
to seal the opening.

Thx jim

I thought the old dish washing soap was only for gas lines.

Here is a pic more specifically where i know there was air leaking

Ingersol doesn't make that part, you can likely get it at Graingers or similar supplier. Might just be a bad o-ring. Soapy water does work well. Black pipe really has to be installed well to be leak proof as well. Did an install a long time ago with Teflon tape, lots of leaks. Switched to a good pipe dope (no not me) to stop the leaks.

Thx rich.

Just looking at it, it doesn't look like it easily comes apart and I'm wondering if i replace the while electronic box, if that part may come with it. Heck, I don't even know what that part is called. I figured id just contact IR and hope the tech peoples can help.

Thx guys

Ps. The black pipe was installed with TFE paste aka pipe dope, by a GC friend

I had a similar problem with my IR compressor, it sounded like it was leaking around the switch. There is a brass fitting at the top of the tank, your middle pic, that went bad. Replaced that fitting and the leak went away.

door shop guy

That same kind of thing of not getting a call back is what is making me leary of buying a Quincy. I call and their phone lines are not working for months and finally get an email reply back from Quincy and they say all questions (warranty or not) need to be answered by one of their distributors. What is it with these air compressor companies???!

If it was my company i would have you an answer and the replacement part out to you the same day!!

My vote is the check valve at the tank.
Mine went out a good while back and it causes a leak back thru the pressure switch.
You can get a replacement at Grainger or MSC Direct

Thx everyone. Those who said check valve are correct so far. I called IR again and finally got through. The guy said its likely the check valve.

I also have an air dryer by IR and theres a black bubble looking thing that the condensation comes out of that he thinks the O ring may need replacing.

Thanks for ur help everyone

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
