When I built my building , I bought a grizzly due to running low on money , but did not regret it for a minute. Some days it ran all day everyday. Never had a problem . It took a little bit to get the machine dialed in but once it was , I was able to count on it be true and square. But since I have bought a scmi and we are very happy with it too. Only reason for the new one was that we needed a larger machine .

Frank,
Weve had a few saws, previously a Sicar (Italian) 10' slider and currently a Griggio 10 footer I bought new in 2010. It was about $15K Canadian, and I added later a Tigerfence (about $4000).

I like the Griggio, it serves us well.

In the under $15000 range, you might want to look at Cantek - they have a 10' slider with a computerized fence, powered blade lift, etc. It looks like a decent saw. Not as heavy built as the more $$ saws but looks good. I have several other Cantek machines (wide belt sander, jointer, planer, shaper, dovetail machine and an edge bander) and I have been quite happy with them for the past 5 years.

I bought a Scmi si400 about 2 years ago...10k plus freight and setup.
We have made NO adjustments to either fence in this time...mind you we are a 2 man shop doing about 4-5 kitchens a year...mostly built ins..bookcases, furniture, etc. no electronic anything on the saw means that the electronics can't fail...good thing in my view. Here's a vid I made when I got the saw.

I would recommend a used Altendorf or Martin in good shape. They are built to take a beating and remain accurate over the long term. You should be able to find a good machine within your budget, and the basic design will serve you better than any new Grizzly or similar budget saw. My own preference is solid mechanics and minimal electronics, but the efficiency of digital controls is real- until the circuit board dies and you are dead in the water waiting for a replacement.

This subject has been covered many times here- check the archives. Just in case you have not considered it, if your primary need is for cutting square-edged panels, you may find a vertical panel sw would serve you better, in which case Streibig is the name of the game., If you need bevel cuts, then a slider is what you need.

For that much money you can get a used Altedorf in nice condition. Why settle for anything less. (Martin is top notch as well)

I agree with Kevin and Bruce, go with a high quality used saw. I have a few grizzly tools and they work but there junk by comparison. I'm not sure who makes the tools for bailiegh but there probably in the same class as grizzly. I have a older Casadei KS3200 that works great but getting parts for it is near impossible. My 2cents..

I was in the same boat a couple years ago. I looked at a few Altendorfs but I backed off because the older ones had phenolic ways that get worn and as I understand it, you have to replace the entire carriage if they are worn (determining if they are worn is also difficult if you dont know what you are looking at...not sure about martin. Good luck

I have an older Altendorf (15 years) with phenolic ways which haven't been an issue. If I were looking for a used one I'd call Stiles and ask. You might pay a little more than a privet sale but don't think they would miss represent what they had to sell.

What Kevin and Bruce said.

Look at the auctions, look for a late model saw and try not to pay over half of what new cost.

Yes you will have to do some repair but so what.

OTOH with a decent CNC your sawing needs are greatly reduced.

15k is a great place to be budget wise! You can get any "intro" euro saw brand new, and any high end saw slightly used.

I was in your boat a few years ago, like Chris I picked up the SCM si400. Love the saw, no issues at all.

For what it's worth... get a 10 footer. I'd stay away from Grizzly. I started out with a bunch of green machines, but are almost all replaced...

I bought the Cantek with the powered fence 2 yrs ago. No complaints other than the wrong fuses being installed at the factory for the scoring blade. Definitely within your budget.

As you can see, lots of opinions here. I just bought a new saw last year that is from China and is an altendorf knock off. I paid less than 8k and added a tiger rip fence for 4K. It has been working hard without a hitch and is as good as my 14k Italian machine. I will check the name on Monday.i have owned several brands over the years and find the hype about altendorf or Martin over rated. I would rather invest in more machines to save time in more steps and after 35years in the business and still growing, this has worked for me.harold.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
