How to construct a 14' wide curved soffit12/14
I'm looking for advise on how to construct a 14 foot wide curved soffit. I'm just drawing a blank, I'm thinking of doing a 3/4" MDF top/bottom frame member with spacers a couple feet apart then attaching 1/4" mdf sheets to the frame like in the picture I attached. Anyone have any thoughts or ideas about this?
you got the right idea. i would build the sub structure then attach kerfkore then veneer.
14' is a bit unwieldy, you may want to make it in 2 pieces.
I would make an extra top plate to mount to the ceiling and then hang the beam from.
You may want to use kerf core or phenolic backed veneer then rabbet the kerf core to the plates then veneer the bottom using NBL or similar. The reason is that veneer on a curved shape has a tendency to check. It is better to have the veneer hard glued to the substrate.
Pat: can you get KerfKore with the veneer already applied to it? I'm not familiar with NBL, is that a special type of veneer?
You would have to go to a veneer house. Or make your own using MDF core.
Make sure the grooves don't telegraph to the face.
