Servicing Brandt Gluepot

12/17/15
Bernie

I have a KD55 and am hoping to do some preventative maintenance on the gluepot. I had it rebuilt 2 years ago, but am not looking to got that route again.

I'm planning on replacing the heaters, as they have been sporadically replaced over the years, and I'd just as soon start with a fresh set. I'll also do a full cleaning.

What other parts should I consider replacing? The machine sees moderate daily use.

Thanks.

Watlo anti seize for the elements. sealed bearings if you are taking it out and going to the trouble of new elements

How difficult is it to replace the bearings?

Bernie,
A couple of months ago I had my gluepot, KD54, totally apart and replaced the bearings. Mine were totally consumed with glue(bad seals in bearing) so it was a struggle to get them out because of the glue. Replacement would have been much easier if the glue had not got into the area and bound everything up. If you have a pretty good grasp of mechanical things you should be able to do the job. You will probably need a puller to get the bearings off the shaft. Also clean the port that is used to apply grease at the side of the gluepot to ensure the grease will flow into the bearing area. Also there is a small hole in the bottom of the pot that allows the grease get to the bearings that may need to be cleaned. Small drill bit and long punch. You will need Hi-temp grease, it is much cheaper at Mcmaster Carr. Pack the bearings before you install them. Stiles techs told me to apply grease after each use of the bander. And it was already said to use anti-sieze on the heating elements. Good luck

I don't have a Brandt, but on my machine the bearings attach to the glue reservoir in a metal housing that is almost impossible to get the bearings out of. I would look at your parts list, call Stlies and see if something is offered as a rebuild kit and if sealed bearing are available. A little more expnsive, but in the area of frustration releif , a no brainer

When I clean the pot before dis-assembly I saturated rags with lacquer thinner and place them in the bowl and put the thing in a bag, sealing it for a few hours and the excess glue generaly wipes right out.

I found that Stile does not offer a rebuild kit. You need to order individual parts. Service manual from Stiles is several hundred dollars. If you supply me your email address I can supply you with a parts list for the KD54 which should be pretty close to the KD55. You probably already know that the bearings are in a small sub assembly in the gluepot and it will require some carefull study to determine how to remove the bearings. If I remember your original question. If you replace the bearings note how the old ones come out relative to the seals.
the new bearings I received were sealed only on one side which I thought was unusual.

Thanks very much. I think I have the schematic, but if I can't put my hands on it, I'll check back in.

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
