Edgebanding and frameless cabinets

I have a question regarding frameless cabinets. I'm doing a job now that has 3 different species of wood, plus some painted cabinets. All finished end panels and such will be installed on site. My question is, when you edgeband, do you match the finished exterior wood, or match your cabinets interior? I use prefinished maple for my boxes and was thinking of just using prefinished maple edgebanding for the boxes. In the past, I've matched the exterior wood, but was thinking that for ease of banding I'd do them all the same so as not to mix parts.

I do exterior match.

If you are doing an attached end panel, isn't the whole face showing? And you want to have a 3/4" wide natural maple stripe on a painted end panel? I'd match exterior.

The Face of the box will be behind the doors. The only thing seen on the exterior is the doors/drawer fronts, and the end panels with a solid piece of wood to look like a post.

I've tried matching the exterior the hard way, by staining and finishing/painting, but it's far too time consuming. I personally would not want the banding to match the interior if it were different than the exterior, but it has been done. I think it was Thomasville that had a line of Euro cabinets done this way.....I did not like the look myself.

Nowadays I use PVC banding. I find a color/woodgrain that matches my doors as closely as possible and all is good.

good luck,

We match the exterior, As far as finishing goes we stack up 4-6 sides at once and spray. Clamp all stretchers together and spray as one piece. It actually goes pretty quick

Thanks guys. Up until now, everything has been a natural wood, so it was easy to find a matching band. I like the pvc idea.

we do a lot of euro boxes here and what we do is buy the matching raw wood and wrap it around some 4' long 12 round sono tubes. sand stain spray to match exterior then we roll it back up and run it on the edge bander. much easier then staining and spraying a bunch of random part sizes after its applied.

We usually match exterior.
We try to do 1 MM when we can,
Like Henbob,we stack & clamp, but higher, run wrap & pack around the clamps for overspray, (dozen dedicated clamps)
and wide paper tape on some areas.
For all our white painted stuff, we use 1MM PVC. We have a couple colors that match most paints, Frosty, Designer,Ant. Wh.,Alabaster.....
Took 5 minutes to edge the boxes in the pic... bypass finishing to assembly
Greys,we use folkstone,fog,,,,
Custom colors ,Stack & we paint same CV.
All interior shelves I use 1 MM maple PVC
We have now a Brandt Ambition With Premill, very clean edges, Happy so far.
Been doing it this way for 20 years..
The only time I got a complaint was when I used prefin cherry on the boxes on a stained Budget cherry job. Go figure ....?

Tom C.. How do you go about getting the thicker end panel look? Is that 2 panels glued together then banded?

The tall one is a 3/4" Door panel with a 3/4" MDF bottom section biscuted on & pocket screwed.
Joint is 1/8" Below the top that we stained to match floor.
The panel is then built-up on back side with 3" rip of MDF, Then 1/4" Solid stock glued on. Hoffman lip planed, sanded, 1/16" RO.
The 2 end panels we finished in shop, Conestoga finished all the other .

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
