End trim chipping edge

We have a 2006 Holzher 1310 with the 1918 end-trimming unit that is chipping the leading edge of the panel on the bottom side when the tracing roller drops down. You can see a imprint on the panel edge from the roller and a chip on the bottom side.

I have tried raising and lowering the air pressure on the trimmer and it seems to help a bit but it still chips intermittently.

Can anyone offer any solution that has solved this problem? Any input is appreciated.

It seems like I had that same issue as well a while back and while I'm not totally remembering what we did, I think it had something to do with making sure the two guide rails and the tracer roller were clean and well lubricated with LPS. Let me know if this helps!

Thanks Stewart, I will give that a try.

Make sure no goue on the guide that touches the end of panel and that the bearing roller turns freely. The get stuff in it and won't roll smoothly over the panel.

Did this help? I am having the same issue, and so far nothing has helped.

So I lubed and cleaned the roller and tracer bar face and adjusted the air pressure to a little over 3 bar as per the manual and it seems to have gone away but I have only run a few trial pieces so we will see the next time I do a large run. While reading the manual I came across this statement "After the cut, the forward end trimming unit should accelerate away from the workpiece. If this is not the case, the lower edge of the workpiece may be damaged. This may be remedied by increasing the counter-- pressure (normal setting 3 –0.5 bar) or by changing the line control point in the control unit" I looked in the controller and could find no way to adjust the line control point?

Thanks everyone,
Gerry

Make sure that the end trimmer is beveling freely. Ours was getting stuck, and there was a lot of built up debris blocking it. We also greased what was previously stated. In addition to that, we put a very small about of grease on the plate that the end trimmer rotates on just to help reduce friction. So far this has helped.

Thanks Shawn I will have a look at that also.

I haven't used a holtzer for years and years, but I know that on a Brandt that if your shoes that ride along the face of the edgetape are adjusted to tight or to close to the work piece that they will chip the edgetape at the cut.

Have the same bander, and have had the same issue. When you get glue residue built up on the saw blade it will cause it to chip on the bottom leading edge. Clean your blade and see if that stops the chipping.

Thanks David I take a look at that too.

Gerry, in case you haven't figured this out yet, the trick is to increase the pressure on the front end trimmer. Even though the manual and your machine may say 3 bars, when I increased mine to 4 bars it fixed the issue. Your machine probably isn't the exact same as mine, but I would try that if you are still having issues.

Hi guys,

We seem to have resolved the problem. I think the air pressure was the main problem but cleaning and lubricating every thing that was mentioned I am sure has helped also. It seems with banders like a lot of other things it is not this or that but more often this and that!

Thank you all for taking the time to help.

Gerry

Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
