salice hinges/grass hinges/blum hinges

My question is regarding the Salice door hinges with the soft close built into the cup. My cabinet shop for about 7 years has been using Grass door hinges with the built in piston soft close, we switched to them because of how readily available they were to us. We have never been blown away by the function of the soft close as it seems to "bounce" when a lighter weight door is swung shut. We at times have used blum hinges as well but they seem to behave similar to the Grass. Now recently we began testing the performance of the Salice hinge, I know its less cost but aside from that I really like the overal operation of the soft close. My concern is that over time the gel disc in the hinge cup may not perform after extened use, have any of you used this hinge for a few years already? does it still perform like it did when new? The last thing I want to do is push a product for a few years only to find its failing onces its not "new" anymore.

I have been using Salice hinges for approx. 9 years with no regrets. I have never had a customer to call back about a hinge failing. You must have the hole depth correct on the door because if it is slightly shallow, the hinge will not close correctly. On smaller & lighter weight doors I will use one soft close & one regular hinge to enable the door to close faster. I use the rapido type for faster installation.

We have been using Salice for about 5 years. We had a job where all of the hinges were tight. Probably just a bad batch. Salice replaced them all for free and sent a sales rep to the site to check it out. Besides that, no issues. I like the hinges and the price is right. It's a good hinge.

Funny you say that. We switched to Salice for a couple of years and wound up switching back to Blum because the operation was just smoother in our opinion. We even had a customer complain about it and make us switch them out (he was an azz though).
One feature I really like on the Blum is the ability to switch the soft close off. That way we can put all of the same hinges on there and just rurn 1 off on smaller doors or in places they want them to close quicker.
I think Grass is smooth and slick, they're just big and bulky too.

I feel the same way about the grass being bulky. It also is annoying that they clip on and off in such a way that its possible to clip on only the rear pins but not the front. Often plumbers are taking sink cabinet doors off to install sinks and then a week later the door falls off because its only half clipped in. We do like to keep hinges and drawer slides all the same brand thats why we are using thier hinges because we really like the dynapro slide.

I've used the Salice for several years and like them fine. I also used them on my own laundry room cabinets several years ago and the soft close feature still perform well. I've not had any call backs.

I have been having a 'hard time' getting Salice 3d models of their products. Blum seems to set a very good example of what we need to spec their hardware in our designs. Does anyone know of a good resource of hardware? I prefer parasolid models, but at this point anything would be sufficient. Even decent drawings of Salice would be a start.

Greetings all,

I see two topics I can address.

Let me answer Louis first.

Louis, if you would send me the list of Items that require the 3D CADs I would be happy to provide them. We keep a library of thousands of CADs that are for most of our hinges, slides and other products.

For 3D modeling we would typically provide these in the .stp format. I have the .stp files in the library and can email them to you immediately.

If you require another format (3D/.dwg, 3D/.dxf, 3D/.X_T), this can be done as well.

Here are examples of 2D files we can offer.

Regards,

Just started working with Salice to vet their hinges. I can say I'm impressed with the customer service. Their rep was super-knowledgeable, as expected, but very prompt and detailed in his responses to my questions. Glad to hear the compact, soft-close hinges are durable, as they caught my interest.

FORUM GUIDELINES: Please review the guidelines below before posting at WOODWEB's Interactive Message Boards (return to top)

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.
  • Participants are encouraged to use their real name when posting. Intentionally using another persons name is prohibited, and posts of this nature will be removed at WOODWEB's discretion.
  • Comments, questions, or criticisms regarding Forum policies should be directed to WOODWEB's Systems Administrator
    (return to top).

Carefully review your message before clicking on the "Send Message" button - you will not be able to revise the message once it has been sent.

You will be notified of responses to the message(s) you posted via email. Be sure to enter your email address correctly.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).

The staff of WOODWEB assume no responsibility for the accuracy, content, or outcome of any posting transmitted at WOODWEB's Message Boards. Participants should undertake the use of machinery, materials and methods discussed at WOODWEB's Message Boards after considerate evaluation, and at their own risk.
