Wires through back of cabinet

Hello,

I'm designing TV cabinet for a client. I'm using a 1/2" back. There are various wires and plugs that need to come out the back. Most times I just make a clean 1" hole and pull the plugs through. This client wants like a grommet or hole covering, they don't want to see the plys of the 1/2", it just looks unfinished to them. Also they would like to keep the inside as sealed up as possible and don't like that I have to make a 1" hole to pull the plug through and its less than 1/4" wire in a 1" hole. Picky, but what can I say, anyone have any products or suggestions?

Thanks all!!

Tell them an electrician would drill a 2" hole with a dull hole saw from the wrong direction. Convince them your way is above industry standard. Or get a Lee Valley or Haefele hardware catalog.

I don't do a lot of these, but for mine I used two backs, overlapped ad staggered them. The wires go over one and under the other.

Put the spot they over lap behind the wide part of the TV and no one will ever see the wires.

Not great pics but imagine the front panel moved to the back of the shelf it's on. The centre back panel is actually an inch or two inset.

We have stuff on the top shelf, the TV shelf and the shelf below the TV and you can't see and wires

If you search for “desk grommet” or “cable organizer” you’ll have more options than you could ever want. Nothing wrong with a client asking for this even though it will hardly ever be seen. Suggesting a 1” hole is better than what an electrician would have done and above industry standard is a pathetic excuse for a simple fix that costs a couple bucks.

Yeah I prefer do try and do what my clients ask. Even though I think a 1" clean hole is more than fin for my taste, its not for them. So I figured there had to be a solution out there, but I really don't see what I'm looking for, or I'm not looking for the right thing.

Dropout, that's a neat layout, I've built a bunch of entrainment built ins but had not though of that, most times we bring the back in 2" and run the wires through 1" holes behind and down to the base cabinets. This piece I'm making is more or a free standing unit, and the client wants a minimal look, for the wires to come out a hole just barely bigger than the wire itself.

Craig, Yeah I've used many grommets in my day, but the options I'm looking for are not out there, or I'm looking in the wrong place. I cant find a plastic grommet smaller than 1", aside from that most of the but the Fast Cap version are only one sided, so it might look tidy on one side, but you'll have the plastic collar sitting out the other side. I guess what I'm looking for is a gasket of sorts that is 1 1/4" on the outside diameter with 1/4" hole on the inside that would fit in a 1/2" back.

I'll keep looking and still open to suggestions.

Thanks!

Fastcap has a double sided grommet, but it’s larger than the dimensions you spec and open in the middle. I would contact mockett and see if they have a solution.

There’s instances where it’s important to guide a client, I don’t find comparing my work to an electrician hack one of them. I’d explain to them what options are readily available and steer them towards those solutions. Occasionally some clients are extremely particular about specific details and want a custom ____ or the world will implode if that rather inconsequential detail isn’t just right...in that case, give them a quote for a custom made grommet and make sure you’re compensated accordingly.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
