True32 and beaded inset face frame cabinets

I've recently put a bunch of frameless cabinets, full overlay doors and drawers together with Festool's LR32 system. I was drawn to it because of it's speed, simplicity and the fact that it reduces, I feel, the potential for error (doesn't eliminate, just reduces). I prefer, however the look of beaded inset door and drawer fronts on FF cabinets and I'd like to incorporate the same (True32, Process32, KISS, etc.) process.

I've done a lot of research, especially on True32 and just can't seem to get it through my thick head - why do the drawers and drawer fronts have to be a multiple of 32 (minus reveal) for this type of construction if you're not going to be mounting the hardware to the sides of the cabinet? My first guess is that I'm reading it wrong and won't be able to use a 32mm system with face frames.

To put it simply: How can a 32mm system help me with beaded inset, face frame cabinets?

Thanks in advance for any comments.

It can't... 32mm cabinets gain efficiency with the standardization of hardware placement and flat panel processing. The parts are on 32mm increments because line drilled holes are on the same centers. Door and drawer fronts fit between those holes.

Once CNC enters the picture you can have the same cabinet in any size, with any size front and the standardization of hardware placement. I drill all of my hinges 94.5mm from each end regardless of size.

Your analogy it like comparing apples and zucchini.

If you are geared up for a 32mm system, it makes sense to build all of your boxes to the 32mm system.

You need to make all of your boxes, shelves, drawers shorter by your face frame thickness.

If you can think of face frames as really thick edge banding it gets you going in the right direction.

The #1 reason for using a 32mm system is its metric. You will be defeating the purpose a bit by using inch face frames.

Those dual metric/inch tapes are so last century.

Matt, I used to build cabinets like that....problem I ran into was the limited DB layouts i could come up with using the 32mm system and be fighting with the decorators on drawer size. Then I went frameless and used heavy endpanels. That seemed to please most clients. Today its very few restrictions if any with a CNC.

Sorry it's taken a while for me to get back. I appreciate the comments and information.

Bruce: Got it on the door and drawer fronts, thanks.

Adam: Thinking of it in terms of edge banding helps, thanks.

Paul: Sorry but what do you mean by "heavy" end panels?

Thanks again for the comments.
Matt

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
