prefinished plywood

I currently specialize in mainly face frame style kitchen cabinetry, mostly inset doors but some overlay, and use 3/4" pre-finished maple for the box construction. I have bought from a couple of suppliers that will deliver to our location, but see some fluctuations in quality at times. I prefer Columbia product with an aspen/poplar core but it does run more than some other brands with what appears to be a fir veneer core. I'm interested in what others are using, average pricing, brand/mills, in different parts of the country. Here, it runs from the low to mid $60's per sheet to the mid $80's for a more premium product. Also wondering if anyone has found 3/4" prefinished maple with the mdf veneer layers under face. Seems like it would give a smoother face for the times we are doing solid color finishes on end panels exposed.

John, There is a pretty wide variety of products and brands on the market. The price point if they haven't jumped in your market will. A tariff just removed over half of the prefinished plywood on the market- Chinese and that is causing not only price jumps but shortages.

I have found the classic/armor core type product you are speaking about to be a little flatter, less rippling in face veneer. But usually for the client that isn't too much of an issue, especially since it's inside a box with goods stacked on it. Hard to get a real good visual on it.

I use Garnica, an all poplar core, 2 extra ply's than typical 3/4. Light weight, flat. White birch and in the low $60 UV1S. I have yet to have a sheet delam or not lay flat for me in the 2 years I've been machining it.

So that Garnica is only UV finished on 1 side and it still lays flat?

Like all other plys, it comes in UV2, but yes the UV1 lays flat. When I run the next batch on the CNC I'll take a picture. Of course ply isn't MDF or PB, but then again I cut PB all the time that has tension in it and moves. I have never had an issue with Garnica UV1 laying flat on the CNC. I also can count the voids I've seen on one hand. It's a WPF white birch, I personally like the prefinished maple. The WPF birch is kind of bland to me but it is the inside of a cabinet and I'm not worried about the bland part. The other issue I have, and it might only be my supplier but my supplier does not carry it in 1/4". So we started cutting the backs 1/2" with no nailers on the backs.

We've always used Columbia 3/4" prefinished 1 or 2 sides. Our backs are always 1/2' prefinished 1 side. 16 gauge staples.

I bought a few sheets of the imported stuff about 10 years ago. It was so bad we chopped it up and used it for ladders & kicks.

Chris,
Is this imported from Spain? I'm trying to see if there is a dealer in the NE I could get it from. Atlantic Ply, Richeleiu and Wurth are my closest suppliers.

It is from Spain, yes. I believe Antlantic ply carries it. They use to be near me. There should be one in ME and MA

Wurth has it by us.

I tend to use chinese import on the inside of my cabinets...it does vary in thickness and voids, but it is the inside of the cabinets. It runs in the mid 40's per sheet for 3/4" for 1 side finished..add $3 bucks for both sides. I use a higher grade non-import for finished areas on the outside of the cabinet. It will normally run mid $60's for birch or maple.

We used Columbia for years but have switched to Garnica and been using that for a couple years now. It is about $7-$8 less per sheet and the quality is better. When using Columbia UV1S, we always had a least 2 sheets in a unit that would be scratched badly. I don't think that I have seen one yet in the Garnica. The finish on the Garnica is noticeable smoother and the weight per sheet is less (they claim 30%) which make a big difference for us since we make a lot of really large units that we have to haul up multiple flights of stairs. We buy the Maple UV1S, Maple unfinished, and Maple UV2S.

I also have had good results with the Garnica line, sourced from Atlantic Plywood. It is not formaldehyde free, if that makes a difference, though it does meet a certain standard (CARB 4?) for emissions.

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.

  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
