We delivered a whole apartment of custom cabinetry and completed installation. The is a free standing room divider /TV lift unit with miterfolded high gloss olive wood acrylic veneer. Unit was left uncovered as electricians had to acess inside to hook up electrical from tile floor and TV installer has to attach TV to lift. There is a design/build firm in charge of renovation.
Client was just at apartment and sent me and designer pictures of this unit that has been damaged with smashed corners and all miterfold has to be replaced. How do you guys handle this? Thanks.

What wording do you have in your contract for site damage? Did you tell them to send pictures to the other sub and that subs insurance company? Only had it done once when a carpet company damaged a walnut corner cabinet. It was a simple sand and touchup under a molding, so just did it quickly to make the customer happy.

We photo all work at installation, and send this to GC or client on the same day, should something happen (and it does) liability is determined quick.

No one will take responsibility! Fotos are nice but the owner will still be unhappy. Trades need someplace to pile their work & tools! Some things are nearly impossible to fix on site, then what? Job is 1000 miles away. Been there, don't know the ideal solution.

this happens ALL the time. We cover our cabinets and tops but all that does is gives the other trades the impression that now it is safe to put their materials and tools on top of it and even work on it. It is just that some (not all) trades have absolutely no respect for others work. It is especially prevalent in large commercial jobs where the majority of workers do not even speak english and they are there simply to make money and nothing else. They tell you "no speak da englize" but when they go out to the break truck they can tell the guy exactly what they want in english! We were working on a high rise and brought our lunch and water in a large soft sided cooler which someone took a razor knife to by pass the lock. When someone does that you think they will respect your work?
We always try to keep our work protected but we inform the GC that you want it installed now and once it is completed then it is yours and any damage that occurs it is your responsibility to pay for it to be corrected
