Saw Stop

Just curious....If your shop has a Saw Stop, have you had any problems with it? Since we put our 3 phase,5 hp into production 4 years ago, we had to replace the capacitor three times, the motor twice, the switch box twice and all of the electrical controls once, now maybe again for the electrical controls. Great saw....when it isn't down waiting on parts.

Tell Chris to keep his fingers out of it.

That's absurd.

I've had a couple of motors(cheap asian), four starting capacitors, and a couple of magnetic switches go bad in my career(20 years).

I'd ask for all of my money back. Send him an electricians bill for changing all the junk.

How can anyone justify that many problems?

Or you could admit to him that you are cutting aluminum on the saw daily.

We keep 2 setup in the shop. We got about 10 years out of one used a couple hours everyday until we got tired of putting money into it and sawstop couldn't tell us what was wrong. We replaced it with a new one with zero problems. I think the second one is about 10 years old now and it has had one switch.

No issues so far but it's only been installed for a year or so.

There would be 100,000's of Powermatic 66 & Unisaws that have been used for decades with little to no maintenance. Change the belts & bearings after much use. Maybe change the starting capacitor.

How many times have those saws done the Stop?

I have replaced two motors each and one arbor in my unisaws in 10 years, If you use them they will need something, They may be good but not Bullet proof,

I have 5 saws between two shops over the past 15 or so years since they came out. We have a new motor on one of them and have changed start and run capacitors on one other one. They are definitely a great saw but I think at the very least they have problems with their start up mechanism and capacitors. All of our machines are single phase 5 hp.
These saws have saved at least 3 accidents that may have been major and cost several thousand dollars in medical expenses.
Oh, and by the way they have never charged me for capacitors and their support is second to none.
I would buy them again for sure.

A couple of things, first have you had your power system checked? With that many problems maybe you are having some huge fluctuations in your power supply to cause the problems, sounds like a lot of issues.
Secondly I am all about safety and the thought of everyone going home at the end of the day with no injuries is very important.
I am however not a huge fan of a sawstop saw and would never buy one as I think they are way over priced. I will for sure never buy one after reading this post with all the problems. I think they have their place, they would be good in a wood shop in a school or maybe for the Home handy man/weekend warrior. I believe in a woodworking shop people are more careless when they are using a sawstop. You need to be taught proper safety and technique for all machines in the shop.
Anyways just my 2 cents.

Curt is a 30 year Veteran of some of the best woodwork done over many years with Southern Architectural, Specialty, Peralta, along with hundreds and thousands of First Class Best quality work jobs in his Career,

But the Best day with Him I will ever remember is the day he looked up at me with a big (Rare) Sh!t Eating Grin and said "Man thanks for buying that saw"

Not sure i would exclude myself from "It will not happen to me" But i will keep those who do in my Prayers.

Mind you I split my thumb in half twice over 364 days, It was at that point I bought a CNC and went to Saw Stop.

FORUM GUIDELINES: Please review the guidelines below before posting at WOODWEB's Interactive Message Boards (return to top)

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.
  • Participants are encouraged to use their real name when posting. Intentionally using another persons name is prohibited, and posts of this nature will be removed at WOODWEB's discretion.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
