Anyone here do Refacing?

or know someone that does refacing?...I have an opportunity to do a reface job for a friend of mine and I'm wondering what's the best way to do it nowadays. Years ago I worked at a refacing place where they would sand all the lacquer off, then contact cement 1/8" veneer on and cover the corner piece with a 1/8" thick piece of solid wood, also contact cemented on. Then after this place went outta business I met a guy who mitered all his corners and applied all the veneer with construction adhesive and pin-nailed all the veneer on. I thought mitering 1/8" veneer was kinda chinsy, but I guess it worked for him. Then later I met a guy who made all new face frames and applied veneer where needed. Anyone out there know what people are doing nowadays??

i went to a class offered by a local supplier and did one job. Its just not what I enjoyed doing. But this system used veneer for the frames and veneer or plywood for the sides. I think if you do it enough and get a system going it could be profitable but it can get to be 75% of a new kitchen so I'm not sure its worth it. But, when I saw the kitchen several yrs later it still looked great. I worry about the veneer coming loose, edges chipping and so on. mike

We have done a few in the past. Most of the time its not worth it cost wise because there is a lot of labor involved. One house that was done was a house my wife and I moved in after we got married. This was a family members house that we had done about 10-15 years before we moved in. Everything still looked perfect. To do this we would buff the clear coat on the cabinets then just glue on 1/4". we would use a 3/4" corner on anywhere the 1/4" came together.

PSA pre finished veneer. A little tedious to apply, but looks good when you're finished. New door/drawer panels and some crown. I, like the others don't like doing them and there is a lot of labor involved in applying the veneer. I would not use the stuff you have to color and finish in house.

The pros like Home dumpy and the like use PSA veneer. I did one about ten years ago where I took the old FF off and more or less copied it with new doors. I glued and shot it on here and there. Still looks good!
