Cabinet hardware application help

3/13/19

I have a cabinet design idea, however I am having trouble figuring out what hardware can be used to perform the needed function. he cabinet will have 2 banks of drawers. I would like each set to be able to be pulled all the way forward, separately , then swung open like a door to expose another storage area behind. Any assistance would be helpful.

It might be possible you could make something like that work with pocket door hardware if the drawer box weren't to heavy to be supported by a couple hinges on one side. Hinge the box at the back like you would a door and use pocket door slides twice as long as the drawer box length. Of course your cabinet box would need to be deep enough to accommodate the pocket door slide.

I had thought of that. Based on the hardware I looked at, if you try to operate the the glide, basically, with the door closed. The hinge hit the slide mechanism. Under normal conditions, the hinge rotates out of the way when the doors are opened before going back.

Just brainstorming here, but maybe there is a way to fasten a piano hinge to the pocket door glide in place of the euro hinges in a way that it wouldn't interfere with the operation of the glide when the drawer box is in the closed position?

It's been a while, but I remember having to cut a piece of wood to span the two pocket door glides when using them and maybe a piano hinge could be fastened to that and the box.

You could also just fasten a panel to a couple basic full extension side mount drawer slides and then hinge the drawer box to that panel with a piano hinge so that when the panel/box assembly was fully extended out of the cabinet the box could be rotated out of the way.

One last thing. You could make that work the way you had it drawn by using a glide half the size of the case, installing it at the very back and then hinging the back of your drawer box to the front of the panel. Also on the left side of the box put a rail that guides it along a grooved guide mounted on the left side of the cabinet to keep the drawer stable while moving in and out.

What are you trying to accomplish with this design ? I think it’s suspect from the start.

The amount of load on the runners (and hinge ) is going to be immense when the assembly is open. A full length piano hinge would probably carry the load, but you’re going to need VERY stout runners.

The drawers, their runners, and the carrying frame are going to weigh a couple of hundred pounds by themselves. That could double depending on what’s stored in them. Accuride’s vehicle division has super heavy duty slides that will easily carry the weight But they’re very thick and cost several hundred$ a piece. That is going to make concealing them problematic.

More context might help.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
