Wide Belt Sanders

We are a 3 man shop doing mainly 75% frame work and 25% frameless. We are looking for a wide belt to sand face frames, solid panels, doors, base moldings and i"m sure we will find more items. Question is will a single head or dual serve us better. Changing belts would not be an issue if it doesn't take longer than 5-10 mins. A new machine would be more desirable if affordable. Any recommendations; problem machines to stay away from; other things to be aware of. I know Vegas is coming up but would probably be able to get a show price at this time. Hoping for more insight from the forum than the onslaught of salesman. Thanks for any info.

We have a triple head, 120, 180, 220 grits and don't have to change belts. We used to have a double head and had to change belts. I don't think you would gain a lot with a double vs a single head because of the belt changing. Granted with a double you would change once vs twice with the single head. If you use a four grit sequence then a double head would make sense.

We have a 43" double head wide belt scmi sanya. It has been a very good sander. We do have to change belts. 80-120 then switch to 150-180. The sander has a platen that can be turned on or off. This has been very good for mdf veneer panels. For our stain grade we will run a paper belt for the mdf panels at 180.

For a 3 man shop a single head with a platen is plenty. Its not hard to change belts. I can do it in 3-5 minutes. Also it depends on how large your shop is and do you have space for a double or triple head. I would spend my money on going wider. We have a 53" and it is wonderful the amount of stuff you can fit through there.

Please check the electrical and dust requirements for a multi (and single) head machine. That may help you make a choice. You have to have adequate dust collection.

Good luck!

Single head 36 inch with platen is good. Be careful when you go wider the structure of the machine changes quickly. If it’s wider than 36” we don’t want to mess with it. It’s just too big for our size business I refer those types to another shop.

You will be cleaning up cross grain a bunch. Take the time to go to a higher grit belt or you will be going over it forever with a DA. It’s best for sizing face frame stock and for leveling doors, very nice. Once again I don’t want anything larger than 36” for those tasks. We did several time studies and could not justify the additional cost of a multi head machine. We would have needed to run the machine I believe a minimum of (3) hours a day roughly which we just don’t do. Many days it does not get turned on, but with a higher dollar say (3) head machine it’s very hard to justify the cost unless your run old girl.

Get a machine that has good dust collection and one that you can access the belts quickly, safely and easily. Also the drum needs to be accessible so you can pull it off when it gets damaged and it will get marks in it that have to be removed.

Good luck.

I work on widebelt sanders for a living. I don't work for a machine company but for an abrasives manufacturer. I can help you better understand how to fill your needs. Just message me and I can help.

FORUM GUIDELINES: Please review the guidelines below before posting at WOODWEB's Interactive Message Boards (return to top)

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.

  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
