Hi There,
I am thinking of using SmartLister for custom cabinetry & store fixtures.
I am just wondering if anyone has any insight into how well it generates DXF files to output to a CNC?
Specifically does it generate toolpaths for dados & other machining? Also does it support flip operations if a part requires machining on both faces?
But in general any feedback on SmartLister would be welcomed.

What router?
I'll be interested to see what experienced users have to say as I have been playing with Smartlister a little with similar idea.
So far I can tell you that when I designed a simple 3d cabinet it worked pretty well. I selected my router, Thermwood, and Smartlister laid each part flat in it's own dxf file. Each feature was recognized and depicted with 2d geometry which was assigned to different layers that conformed with the Thermwood standards. For example, the outline geometry was on a layer whose name indicated that it was the outline and what the parts thickness was. Samrtlister also expanded the edge dado pass the edge of the part so that the router bit would cut clear of the part.
I then used the Thermwood controller to load the dxf files, nest them, and write the necessary G-Code. I believe I did see a setting for flip ops though I have not had a chance to test that.

How did you find the learning curve? Was it fairly straight forward to setup & use? Do you plan to continue using SmartLister?
I post out G-code to variety of CNC's using Enroute which can import layered DXF files then automatically toolpath, nest & generate G-code.
I will let you know how I find it.

I watched a video on you tube about it and spent maybe a couple of hours with the program. Not enough experience yet to say I'll be using it. However, you can download it for free and find out pretty quick if it has any potential for you. I do see that Enroute is one of the export options in Smartlister.
Cim-Tech has Solid-Cim that seems to do the same thing, maybe plus some. Not free, but of course you can get active support and training.
You make me curious about Enroute.

You might want to look at using SolidWorks with Pathfinder3D. We just came out with Back Side Cut automation. It links seamlessly to EnRoute as well. However, I am not sure if you are looking to switch CAD systems. If you want to stick with AutoCAD, Smartlister is probably your best bet. I have been using Smartlister for about 4-5 years now and have found it to work fine for what we do.
To answer your questions:

We do not generate dxf but dwg. Smartlister can do both. Most parts can be run directly by our cam software. There are a few parts that require some adjusting, but overall it is less than other software I have used.

Smartlister will generate a separate part dxf of dwg for machining on the back face of a part.

Smartlister itself is not difficult to get information in and out of from the beginning.
The bigger factor in learning curve will relate to your understanding of Autocad.
If you have a grasp of Autocad 3d the learning curve is quite simple. If you are good at 2d Autocad the curve will be quite a bit longer, not because of Smartlister, but the process of learning how to draw in 3d. If you have no

Yes it is quite straight forward. There are a few setup tables to input the info to customize for your needs, machining, materials and so on. Overall there was no mind boggling setup of the software. The one thing to be aware of is the latest version runs in 32-bit, which can be accomplished using a 32-bit install of AutoCad even on a 64-bit pc.

Yes. I have used the software for about 4-5 years now and it has lasted much longer than other software I have tried. Though I always keep an eye open for software to make my life easier, I have not found anything that works for us better than Smartlister at this time.
