20/20 design USB key problems

I've had 20/20 design for years and have not purchased the support for the last 5 years. Yesterday I tried to use the software and it wouldn't let me get past the introductory screen. Had a "your device is defective or your soft device has expired" message. Anyone familiar with this problem. The key allows me to reinstall the software which wouldn't be possible with a defective key but it won't let me run it.

is this a new computer install software upgrade. loads of older (now called Apps) will not work on newer op software, many times due to somebody wants more money, I love my brother 11 x 17 all in one printers but they did not like win 10, nor did my cabinet vision with an AMD vid card at 4gigs, had to change all the cards

It's an older version of 20/20 and I have a dedicated older computer with XP that I use to run this specific software only. Like I said, the software was working, up until recently. I tried reinstalling the software over the current install but it still doesn't work after the install. If it was the USB key being faulty it wouldn't have allowed the install, I believe.

Denny, I don't know what the problem might be but I would try to do a system restore to a date when you know it was working

Hi everyone,

The days of USB key, installation, upgrade downloads are over. Innoplanner is built as a web service where you can access catalogs and a design tool from any device.

Check out details about the project in the below link:

On an older machine it could be that the usb port died, it happens. Try another port. If that fails install the software on another machine and try the key. It is doubtful the key died, more likely a hardware issue on an older PC. Yeah I know there are a ton of people who will state that their PC is as old as dirt and still works fine, so do and some develop issues with in 30 days.

I am having a similar issue with 2020 design USB Key

I bought the software in January 2016.
Every year, I paid for the maintenance and update support.

In January 2022, I was having some issue with the software of overlapping measurements. I called to fix the bug, and the guy told me to get the new version 13 and explained that they were migrating to subscriptions only. I was worried about being stuck in a forever subscription plan and losing my original purchase. So the guy told me not to use the USB key on the new version 13 or else the USB key would be deactivated.

I did one better, I left my USB key and program version 12 on my desktop. I didn't even use it since I had my laptop that is more powerful to run version 13. (subscription was 815$+txs)

In 2023, Subscription went up 1200$ +txs

This year, I receive a bill of 2400$ for the subscription. This took me by surprise and I thought it was abusive pricing. I call them up. The best they could do was give me an extra 10% off.

Well, i said i still have my usb key and I just use 2020 for the basic plan and elevation and sample E catalogue. So 2400 is not worth the yearly investment. So i try opening my program on my desktop but the software automatically asks me to sign in with the email instead of just opening up with the usb key.

So, the rep i'm talking to verifies my info on his end and says my key was deactivated in August 2022 and that they cannot in any way reactivate it.

Wow, i just lost my software i paid for!

I decided not to resubscribe this year because of the injustice of this situation.

I wrote them messages to explain the unfairness of this situation and one rep calls me back. He says my key was deactivated in September instead of august and confirms again that there is no way they can send me back the software I paid for. Side note, this man says that it most of been my fault that the key was deactivated, but also mentioned that once subscribe the key would deactivate by itself 3 months later...so technically if that is correct my software should have deactivated itself in April?? It's just not making sense at all.

I got some help from consumer protection, this lovely lady gave me some lead on law article that will help this situation and put 2020 in their place. This is not okay to do towards all their clients, and I'm hoping I am not the only one who is willing to be heard on this.

You can go ahead and pay someone else 150 to 250g's to fight it. I would wish you luck on that, but you probably don't have that much money to throw at it and there are no guarantees.
This sort of behavior from software companies is typical. However, I remember being able to pass all of their output to CNC and the current president of the company at that time did not want me to enable that for the users of 2020, so I walked away.
It seems like every business is getting bought these days and raising prices on existing customers. These 'sunset licenses' and software licence purchases are not actually selling you the product, just a license to use it.
These companies have a lot of established lawsuits of precedent to back up their position that were brought forth years ago by Autodesk and others, and they won.
The positions of the judges were pretty unanimous across the board. If you didn't read your license agreement and understand it then that is your problem. As long as it's clearly worded that's enough.
Now, if you can convince a bunch of judges and appellate judges, because that's what it'll come down to, and possibly a jury too or more, that you shouldn't have to read the license and everything it says should be just what you want it to be then you'll be out a couple of hundred grand and get yourself possibly a software that you could have easily replaced.

FORUM GUIDELINES: Please review the guidelines below before posting at WOODWEB's Interactive Message Boards (return to top)

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.
  • Participants are encouraged to use their real name when posting. Intentionally using another persons name is prohibited, and posts of this nature will be removed at WOODWEB's discretion.
  • Comments, questions, or criticisms regarding Forum policies should be directed to WOODWEB's Systems Administrator

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
