this will sound completely ignorant so apologies right up front but, I'm trying to help a family member who is looking to sell his Planit Solutions Cabinet Vision software package he bought a few years back for his CNC router. to be completely honest, it is not mine, i am not a cabinetmaker, simply someone a bit more web-savvy than he is trying to understand if its possible to re-sell, if so where, and how to arrive at a fair price. completely ignorant and open to suggestions, directions, recommendations. I'll be honest too i just found this site for this purpose so apologies if I'm going about this in an improper fashion or have posted this in the wrong place.

Pretty sure they charge 50% of what it would cost to buy to re-license, plus the new owner has to come up to date with all missed updates. No personal experience, just something someone stated somewhere else.

So- basically you can't unless you are willing to take a HUGE loss on it.

thx thats already a whole lot more than I knew. unfortunately I think he is already braced for a deep discount. and another question if I may -- and again from complete ignorance -- but couldn't a new owner simply install and use as-is? is that not physically possible? and I guess as importantly, does this violate the licensing agreement? Im not a lawyer but in reading the agreement, I see it is "non-transferable", but that it can be transferred from one computer to another so long as it is used on only one computer at a time. and understand I'm not looking to advice him to violate his agreement. thx again!

I believe any selling would violate the license, but am not really sure. I remember seeing the 50% thing somewhere or another, maybe on their web site?

one computer in the same business to another computer in the same business, the no transfer clause is transferring the license to another company or entity.

This is from the Planit Customer Service Policy Guide. It may have been updated since Vero took over.

Software License Transfers
The registered user of the software accepts the Planit Solutions Software License Agreement
when installing the software. See Software License Agreement.
The Software License Agreement states that the software license is nontransferable. This means
that the software cannot be used by anyone other than the registered user of the software and his
employees.
In certain situations, Planit Solutions will allow a transfer of the software license to a new
registered user of a different company. This would be the case if you are selling the software to
another individual or company; or you are closing your business and auctioning or selling
company assets.
Software License Transfer Request
A letter from the original registered user must be sent to Planit Solutions, Inc.
stating that they wish to relinquish the software license and the reason why. A
total count of the software security devices must be included in the letter. The
letter must be signed by the original registered user of the software. The letter
must have the new intended user¡¦s full name, business name, business
address, and phone number.
„h Planit Solutions, Inc. will reply to the letter either approving or denying the
request, and the reason.
Page 45
Software License Transfer Criteria
„h All software security devices must be returned to Planit Solutions, Inc. If the
previous user had four software security devices, all four must be returned.
Software license transfer cannot take place unless all software security devices
are returned. Software security devices cannot be split.
„h Rental Security Devices must also be returned, but will not be transferred to the
new user.
„h A software license transfer fee of 60% of the current list price of the transferred
software must be paid to Planit Solutions, Inc.
„h The software must be brought up to date to the most current software version.
„h A new post processor must be purchased if the S2M Center software is to be
integrated to a new machine.
„h An on-site Integration must be purchased if the S2M Center software is to be
integrated to a new machine.
„h It is also recommended that training be purchased with a software license
transfer, especially if the new user has little or no experience with the use of the
software. Planit Solutions Technical Support cannot be used for training or retraining
of software.
Software License Transfer Benefits
„h The latest versions of all software being transferred will be delivered to the new
registered user.
„h New security devices will be issued with the new registered user¡¦s company
name programmed into the device.
„h A One Year Advanced Annual Support and Maintenance subscription.

thx again all. my take on all this is they take a very deliberate approach in making a re-sale as unattractive as possible. and frankly i'd have to say i understand why -- its really intellectual property they are "licensing", not "selling" some DVD's. makes sense. no different I guess than for Microsoft for their "office Suite", or Photoshop. again, thx for the input.

Why couldn't you sell the business to someone along with the software.
Wouldn't the software still be registered to the original company?

You could sell the computer it's installed on and forget to uninstall it.

FORUM GUIDELINES: Please review the guidelines below before posting at WOODWEB's Interactive Message Boards (return to top)

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.
  • Participants are encouraged to use their real name when posting. Intentionally using another persons name is prohibited, and posts of this nature will be removed at WOODWEB's discretion.
  • Comments, questions, or criticisms regarding Forum policies should be directed to WOODWEB's Systems Administrator
    (return to top).

Carefully review your message before clicking on the "Send Message" button - you will not be able to revise the message once it has been sent.

You will be notified of responses to the message(s) you posted via email. Be sure to enter your email address correctly.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).

The staff of WOODWEB assume no responsibility for the accuracy, content, or outcome of any posting transmitted at WOODWEB's Message Boards. Participants should undertake the use of machinery, materials and methods discussed at WOODWEB's Message Boards after considerate evaluation, and at their own risk. WOODWEB reserves the right to delete any messages it deems inappropriate. (return to top)
