Trying to draw walls of a CV job in autocad

2/14/15
Mike

Im having an issue trying to figure out how to draw these walls from a cv jov into autocad cuz i thought it would be easier if i could do it in acad first, then transfer to cv

As you can see, i have some odd shaped angled walls and some typ. 45 and 90 deg corners

Im having an issue drawing the odd angled walls and then into typ. 45 and 90 degs off of those odd angled walls.

Can someone pls help me understand the math behind trying to do this. I got the 90 deg walls off the odd angles, but that was only from screwing with acad for a while last night and now im just flat out frustrated

Sometimes I have to send the floor plan to drawing and then use the angular dimension tool to know what the angles are. Then I go back to plan view to adjust.

Use the buttons at the end of the ucs toolbar. They are rotate x, y and z. You'll only need the the z one.

Rotate the ucs to the angels you have already drawn, then turn on the ortho (F8) to snap 90's off the angled lines.

I can't upload the dwg here, but here is are 2 pdf's.

It doesn't look like your cv drawing. The second pdf is higher res. I'm not sure if that will help.

Or can't you just use construction lines?

Just select the construction line icon and then draw you first horiz or vert line, then hit the space bar to repeat the command and this time select Ang and then type in the angle you want and then select the though point.

Or Dave send me the DWG and I will load onto dropbox and Mike can get it that way. If interested let me know?

Thx guys.

After my father in law (whos really good in math) came by last night, im even more confused. When i first drew it, i went in a clockwise fashion because i figured the critical part was where the systems are at.

My FIL had me draw it going counterclockwise and so did an autocad friend of mine and what i dont understand is when i drew the wall going up to the left at 140.5 degrees by @(dimension) <140.5, then dimensioned it, it showed it as 129.5. WHY!?!
Because when i drew it clockwise and "winged it", it showed that angle at 140.5.

From what my friend said, it all depends on the direction you're drawing as to where say 270 is at. I dont get it. :-(. Can anyone pls help me better understand this?

140.5° off vertical = 129.5° off horizontal, depending on the direction you measure. 270° will vary only if you're rotating or have moved the UCS.

You understand that Auto Cad measures 360 degrees.

0 degrees starts at the horizontal line.

Measuring counter clockwise from the horizontal to the vertical is 90 degrees.

If you enter 140.5 degrees it does measure 140.5 degrees from the horizontal line.to angled line.

Does that make sense?

If not just google this question, there are a lot of tutorials and videos about Auto Cad.

What version of CV are you using ?

I get that acad works counterclockwise, but one of what im not understanding is why when i drew the walls in a clockwise rotation and fudged the angles, i got it to show 140.5, but when i drew it counterclockwise and used the angular tool, it showed 129.5. If i did @50<140.5 and did an angular dimension, why wouldnt it show it as 140.5, instead of 129.5 when drawing that wall up to the northwest, vs southeast. Northwest shows 140.5, but southeast shows 129.5. If i think about the 360 degrees, northwest on the "autocad dial" would be correct but if i were going in the southeast quadrant, it would be between 225 and 360.

Have i confused the hell out of anyone else? Lol. Sorry!

It all depends on the UCS (User Coordinate System) in Autocad, as Mark pointed out, and not to be confused with the CV UCS (user created standard).

The UCS in ACAD is your framing square that all coordinate and angle input is referenced against unless you specifically tell ACAD to use something else as a reference.

If you put a framing square on a wall so that the 24" side is parallel with the ground and want to draw a line at a 45 degree angle to the floor, you can just rotate the framing square (UCS) 45 degrees.

The line you draw will be at 45 degrees of the floor, but will have a relative 0 degree angle from the framing square.

There are many different ways to do this in ACAD. I suggest you study Mastering Autocad by George Omura.

If you email me I will send you the dwg. You may need to have membership here to email me through a message.

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
