Thermwood cut center

We have been growing rapidly and thinking of getting into CNC but have zero programming experience and my workers have nine as well, build strictly frameless cabinetry with slab materials and 1 piece mdf shakers, also planning to retire within 5-8 years and hope to have a well running company to offer, have sold my business before in Canada and my company’s reputation is excellent here in Florida now, Has anyone bought the thermwood cut center and are you happy with it? I know it’s expensive, but have never regretted making machinery investments that can pay for themselves in the lease period or sooner, we may be growing into a bigger space and have two sliders now and a great Brandt Bander that can handle a lot of production . Opinions and experience is appreciated, but I will not be getting into the programming business due to lack of skills and time, harold.

I am not experienced with KCD but I am pretty sure you can add to your existing software and it will "program" the machine.

I am not saying there won't be a learning curve but it won't be "programming". Hopefully someone will chime in who had made that transition with that software.

Harold,

You may not find many WOODWEB visitors that are using the Thermwood Cut Ready Cut Center. Not because there aren't any, but due to the high level of support integrated with the machine package.

Your best bet would probably be to contact Thermwood and ask them for references to owners/users of the Cut Ready Cut Center. I am sure they would be happy to provide you with a list.

Happy "Programming Free" Cutting!

You are probably right Brad.,I got a call from someone that sells forcthermeood and there is a company in Florida that has one and he is one of the companies on the thermwoodcdite that was interviewed . I hope to speak to him soon and perhaps visit the facility. Still not sure I am ready to make the leap as it’s a major investment, but need to find a way to keep up without the need to learn all the programming of a regular CNC, thx.

That right you hardly ever see thermwood owners on here, looking for help. Tha'ts because Thermwood service is the best there is, none better. They have been supporting me for 11 years now.

Will is exactly right, you cannot and will not beat thermwoods service and you cant beat there routers. If you have a problem, they take it personal and will get it solved. I had problems with my post from CV that Planit could not get solved, Thermwood took over and got it running and I never seen so much as a $1 invoice. As far as the cut center, I have studied it, I think you could get 90% residential work done in it, but if you run into oddball stuff or commercial, you will need some programming/software skills, I just dont beleive you could get by with out something. Your Router will come with ecabs and you can accomplish the other 10% with that, although there is a learning Curve. I run my router with CV because I do a lot of commercial work, if I did not I would still be using E-cabs, I made a lot of cabinets and money with it!

Did you buy the cut center?
If so, how has it been working out?
Have you made any curved casework with it?
I've had routers for 20 years and do a lot of curved work, something a router is very good for.
Your router will increase your production a huge amount. 6 minutes for all the parts for a case, fully detailed! You may want to consider investing in a vacuum lift to load it.
Let us know how it has worked out.

Hi Larry, I have not been to see the machine in operation and am still on the fence with this. We do very little curved work at all. I now have 6 guys , but I am the driver of the business and wearing so many hats that it’s hard to find the time to devote to this possible change. I have a wife that is not well and I would rather devote my evenings to her and my other passions than spend more time on the business and I don’t really believe that with the staff I have, who are all great guys, but not technological in any way, that the change would be better for me. I may be wrong on this and am still considering it. Harold.

Are you going to IWF? I'm sure they will be demoing it there. I looked at it when it first came out. The idea was to make it easy for kitchen cabinet shops to get into routing. I think they did very well at it. Pretty much down to point and click. There are several cabinet shops in my area that have gone with convention software and routers after having spent quite a lot of time talking to me and watching mine run. They all now say they would get out of the business if they couldn't have a router. The difference is huge. I know Thermwood has been adding more features to the system to allow more things to be built with the automation of the software. Yes, the price seems a bit high but you are getting far more than just a router. Software, training and the backup offered by Thermwood are worth a lot. I don't have any interest in Thermwood and don't own one.

Meet me at the CNN building for lunch and we'll swap lies about the advantages of a router.
See you at IWF??

The "Andy Patel" (or whoever is posting under that name) posting above can also be found in the Woodweb CNC Forum twice in the same thread reflecting >>> EXACTLY THE SAME THING AS WAS POSTED ABOVE <<< but referencing two (2) OTHER CNC brands of equipment besides Thermwood !!???!!! ("CNC Factory Sidewinder" and "Biesse Rover B FT HD")

(See link below)

"Andy Patel's" posting here discrediting Thermwood should be disregarded. (Woodweb should actually remove it.)

Just so people do not see my previous post in this thread and go "What was he talking about????"...

I would just like to thank "the powers that be" for removing the obviously FAKE postings that my previous submission referred to. (No I am not crazy - they were there. LOL I have a screen grab!)

Stay safe all...

FORUM GUIDELINES: Please review the guidelines below before posting at WOODWEB's Interactive Message Boards (return to top)

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.
  • Participants are encouraged to use their real name when posting. Intentionally using another persons name is prohibited, and posts of this nature will be removed at WOODWEB's discretion.
  • Comments, questions, or criticisms regarding Forum policies should be directed to WOODWEB's Systems Administrator
    (return to top).

Carefully review your message before clicking on the "Send Message" button - you will not be able to revise the message once it has been sent.

You will be notified of responses to the message(s) you posted via email. Be sure to enter your email address correctly.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).

The staff of WOODWEB assume no responsibility for the accuracy, content, or outcome of any posting transmitted at WOODWEB's Message Boards. Participants should undertake the use of machinery, materials and methods discussed at WOODWEB's Message Boards after considerate evaluation, and at their own risk. WOODWEB reserves the right to delete any messages it deems inappropriate. (return to top)
