V Carve and Automation

I currently work for a company using V Carve Pro. We do the same parts everyday. The product never changes. The only thing that changes are counts. Different products ordered by customers. I am very familiar with Router Cim. If we used it the less than 70 parts would be drawn, layered and saved. Then a cut approach would be made and saved in Router Cim so when it sees a layer in any drawing it produces a tool, lead in lead out and cut approach every time then nests automatically.
Is there any like process in V Carve? It appears we manually nest parts.
Second can I toolpath a proven part and then array it?
I need some solid advice about how to automate this until we find new software that can handle this repetitive part production simply.

Vectric has a very aggressive, active, and knowledgeable, forum that may be a good place to cross post if you already havent.

VCarve pro has the same capacity you speak of by the sounds of what you posted in that you can save any toolpaths needed to given layers (named whatever you like) and then you can also generate and save toolpath templates which can contain a single toolpath or an entire slew of toolpaths that will be automatically generated and applied to the layers you assign. So if you have a pocket cut you can put those pockets on layer "pocket 1", you can generate a tool path that is associated with that specific layer. Everything on pocket 2 could have a different tool, toolpath, and so on, and an automatically generated toolpath associated. One for drilling, one for profiling, and so on.

Im not sure what your situation with the "lead ins and lead outs" would be or if you are running form tools that undercut. Those lead-in's and lead-out's should be in the toolpaths themselves.

With regards to an array of course. There is an array button clearly in the menu. So if you have 70 different parts, once you have generated the vectors for those parts (with any needed lead in/outs) and your customer wanted 64 of them you could generate and array that left you with 64 pieces, select all, then hit nest, it will nest them in your sheet size for the job, and they you can use the "apply toolpath template to all sheets" gadget to apply your toolpaths.

"Those lead-in's and lead-out's should be in the toolpaths themselves." Should have been vectors not toolpaths. Your leads would be in the vector drawing for the part or in for instance a profile tool path you can go into the "leads" tab and add leads as needed for that toolpath and they would be automatically added.

Thanks Mark. As far as nesting is concerned will the software automatically put the parts on the sheet. Meaning if I have 5 cabinet sides and 4 decks, and the cut strategy has been defined , will the software just lay it out toolpath it and simply give me gcode once I select the parts in the job with the count?

Yes. Though the nest would of course vary based on what mix of parts you are nesting (seems obvious I guess). I have no idea with regards to the specifics of your situation and now you mention cab parts, but yes. If you had x number of x cab to build or any variety of other cabs you would just load the vectors from your cab software, they would come into Vcarve as a file (hopefully pre-arranged on toolpath specific layers already) and you would simply nest them with whatever nesting parameters you choose, part rotation, nest inside other parts, whatever.

At that point you can load and apply a toolpath template which may have 1 or 50 different possible toolpaths that would apply to specific layers. The key would be to have your vectors come into Vcarve layered so once you ran a single job with every possible option it would just be routine at that point.

The only issue may be if you need specifics on the leads. We rarely do leads so not completely clear on how that would apply but you can apply leads to any toolpath and any tool path can be saved as a template. If I had specific needs for leads (where they start, stop, and over-runs) I would be putting that in the vector layer. Im not sure how Vcarve handles where leads are generated by default or if they are moveable.

I don’t know if this is still relevant but I may be able to help. I worked at a metal sheet fabrication factory, and pretty much 80% of it was automated. I do know that the owner always ordered the equipment from one company only, so I guess he was satisfied with their products, but I don’t know how good their software is, we used their tech exclusively with no problems, so could be something worth checking out.

FORUM GUIDELINES: Please review the guidelines below before posting at WOODWEB's Interactive Message Boards (return to top)

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.
  • Participants are encouraged to use their real name when posting. Intentionally using another persons name is prohibited, and posts of this nature will be removed at WOODWEB's discretion.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
