Pocketing MDF
3/27/15
Good morning All.
Is there any bit style/geometry that is better than others for the bottom of a pocket in MDF?
We're starting to do some 1 piece doors and surface finish is as least as important as speed.
Thanks.

I've done a lot of these over the years, not steady every day, but a job here and there with bits from a regular 3/8 compression up to a 4" spoilboard cutter. Use a plunge cutter for sure. I like a 40 or 50 mm bit with replaceable tips best. This diameter range seems the best balance between least passes to plow out the center and less cleanup in the corners. I have been using an Amana RC-2180 lately, then a corner cleanup with a 3/8 compression and last a 1/8 diameter flat bit to sharpen the corners. The biggest potential machine issue is to be sure your spindle is perpendicular to the table, so you don't have ripples in the successive plow out passes. You also need good Z agreement between the various tools. I usually start by cutting a small 8 or 10 inch test door to be sure everything is dialed in before committing to a 5 or 10 sheet run of panels.
