CNC Electro-Spindle Tool Sticking - HSK

10/13/15
Jon Member

We have a CNC with a HSK type Electrospindle.

The tool gets stuck now daily - quite often but besides this the machine is generally fine.

Does anyone know what the problem may be or if we need to look at a certain area to find a problem sensor and or adjust something.

The Technicians in Sydney don't know.

G'day Jon
With several Biesses over the years, I've had this problem also. What I did on our Rover 23Rs was not too hard. What machine is it on and do you have an exploded spare parts diagram ?? There is a plate under the piston that it pushes against and releases the collet. Over the years it wears and as it does, it doesn't have enough travel to push the tool away from the taper to release it. It just sits there hissing air and then times out. I just turned it over and it worked like new with a positive solid clunk every time it releases the tool. I guess one day, if it starts doing it again, I'd have to make a new part of weld up the worn area. If you are semi competent with mechanical things, it's not that complicated. I'm in Sydney too. What technicians did you consult ??

Hey Danny,

Thanks for the reply

We have a Morbidelli. We originally bought it from an reller that has lost the selling rights. Gabbet currently have the contacts but we done have a good contact there - they did a health check on our machine last year and rendered it non operational for 8 days - then never came back. (it was working before they got here).
So we therefore try to solution it ourselves.
Got the manual but I am not real mechanical but I cant find an exploded electrospindle diagram - where is the plate exactly within the spinde?

Thanks

We have a HSD SPindle From SCM

Before anything else, make sure the "OUTSIDE" of the tool holder and flat mating surface of the electro spindle is lubricated with something like Lusin or a dry lube. The fingers of the electro spindle need its own lubrication, but that may not be be your immediate problem,

We lube the tool holders twice a week with the dry lube and the bottom plate of the electro spindle where the tool holder meets spindle and all the sticking went away. Just spray all of the tool holders and wipe them down. We spray the rag and wipe the flat part of the spindle.

For the fingers turn the machine to manual, and eject the tool holder manually, while pushing the manualy release the fingers will be exposed. using paste grease for this, make sure you are using what is spec'd, get a stiff nylon brush and apply a small amount of grease to the fingers, and work it in. Press and release the fingers repeatedly.

Try doing the proper spindle maintenance, the pdf shows the parts numbers for appropriate lubricants. The maintenance should be done every one to to weeks. Drawings for the spindle are proprietary, and will be extremely difficult to get.

Have you been cleaning the spindle? That is step one.

We do clean the Spindle and have done from day 1 - Religiously - so to Bill that is a yes (at least 3 times a day).

We are Following that cleaning and maintenance guide Thanks Rob - Our version is in Black and White but nice to know we have the correct maintenance sheets.

We were told by the Sydney Tech to flush out the spindle with WD40 to get any excess dust out - we were already having problems before we tried this.

Just now though - reverted back to the method attached by rob but no love yet.

Just curious Jon, what do you do to get the tool out at the moment ?? I always had to give the toolholder a little tap with a hammer to get it to let go.

Hi Danny

We set the manual release and press the remote whilst we are at the tool.

Sometimes (but rarely) the tool drops out but most times we just Downwards tap on the tool with a rubber mallet and it comes out.

Oh boy, it seems you guys need a little HSK101 along with HSD101.
1. Do you hear the valve trying to spit out the tool when pressing the manual tool release button?
2. While holding the release button a steel hammer tap to the side of the HSK will pop the tool out.
3. To prevent this from happening again you need to use LusinG31 spray on the mating surface of the "HSK cone.
4. Do not ever use WD40 on an HSD motor.
5There is also Metaflux paste you should be applying to the draw bar when pressing the tool release button.
At BVC we supply both the G31 spray as well as the Metaflux paste. 909 606-0140

Hi Mike McClaran,

Mate - thanks so much for the info.

I am not a machinist by trade but I do have to work with them.

In Sydney Australia, it seems that no-one (from a technicians perspective) really understands these machines.

We are quite literally fumbling through problems.

All we have done is follow the guidelines given to us which I suspected were wrong.

I reverted to Lusin after much online reading and we still have a bit of an issue (not as much) so I hope it will go away as the WD comes out.

Is the Metaflux paste available in Australia?

Likely not available in your country and if so probably very expensive. We ship to Australia all the time. We can even go US mail if you want. Probably 20 US dollars to get it to you. Or 100 if you find it there. Buy some Better Vacuum Cups and I will throw in the HSKG31 and Metaflux paste for free.

You should not have to rap the tool holder with a mallet to eject the tool from the spindle. It should come right out with the push of the spindle release button.

One of the tricks we used was to coat the tool holder with Lusen and stick it in the electrospindle and twist it, coating the contact surface. Keep doing this until the spindle releases

Check the extraction height of the drawbar. When it is fully extended, it needs to be 10.8mm +/- 0.10mm. The measurement is from the tip of the draw bar to the nose of the spindle where the hsk holder rests.

G'day Jon,
Just curious, have you tried any of the suggested lubricants, release agents etc yet???
If so, did it fix your problem ??
The only thing to ever fix my problem was to fix the wear on the draw bar.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
