Spindle clamp down sensor alarm

12/24/15

I have an Omnitech Selexx Mate cnc router. During a tool change, I got a spindle tool clamp down sensor alarm. I shut the air off and released the hose to the carousel and was able to push the carousel back but the tool is stuck in the spindle. The tool release button on the side of the spindle doesn't do anything. I have used the E-stop and rebooted everything a few times to no avail. Just before this happened the spindle dropped a tool out of the spindle so something is screwed up.

Anyone have any ideas how to fix this? I can't get to the sensor at this point because it is buried back inside the spindle somewhere.

I should also note that nothing bad ever happens during the week- only on Friday afternoons or just before a holiday when everyone at Tech Support has gone home!

Thanks.

Dave,

Do you know or can you look up the code (perhaps an "m" code) for the unclamp action? You could try entering that by itself to see if it forces a release.

I'm thinking that the unclamp sequences uses a series of codes to complete the action. It could be possible the unclamp sequence is getting stopped before it ever gets to the unclamp code line.

That is how things are set up on my CNT Motion router with a HSD spindle.

A totally wild shot in the dark here but perhaps worth checking out.

Good luck,
BH Davis

I have an omnitech spectra. I had the same thing happen about a month ago. It turned out the machine wasn't completely clamping the tool holder into the taper and causing the alarm. I couldn't get the tool holder out as well and through a series of different attempts ending up telling the machine to change the tool. It was able to get the tool out but it was loud and I don't know if I'd recommend it. Once the tool was out I just cleaned everything really well with wd40 and had it do a bunch of tool changes and everything was back to normal. Prior to that tech support had me take out the sensor on the spindle and test it. It was working so they thought it just needed to be adjusted. I adjusted and ran the machine and had a horrible vibrating noise. That is how I discovered that the tool wasn't clamped in completely. You can also open the cover on the machine and manually activate the solenoid that controls the clamping of the tool to try to release it that way. It didn't work for me though because the clamp was actually stuck.

Dave-

We used to run into this daily where the plc would tell us it hit a time out in a tool change. One day we tried to manually releade the tool holder and had to use a hammer. Looking at it we discovered it was filthy and had the consistency of a rusted item-with no surface rust.

We set up a maintanence program that has taken care of this problem for us. We run about 10 hours a day with multiple tool changes. We clean all the tool holders with alcohl and the spray them with Lusin. We spray one with a liberal amount and work it in to the spindle.

We run this program every Monday morning and check it off as we go. We also clean filters, check fluids, grease all nipples, blow the machine down, check the collector fittings and inspect the chain. We aslo make sure the FRL is using the proper amount hydralic fluid

I hope this helps

cabinet maker is right.

There is most likely a build up of "Crud" on your tool holder that is preventing a smooth release of the tool. Using a rubber mallet to release the tool and then ensuring everything is clean should correct the problem. Of course monitoring this and preventing it in the future is key.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
