Tool for 1/8 grove
2/26/16
Hi,
I'm building a file drawer, wanted to have two groves on front and back of the drawer to fit aluminum rails that carry the hanging folders.
got 3mm or 1/8 downsher tool but it broke at the first grove.
please see attached setup for the tool and if you have any ideas to accomplish this task pleas let me know.
Thank you.

Am I reading the plunge depth as 1 inch. On my software I would set that at no more than .125 inch so it would take smaller bites.

I would be feeding that bit around 60 ipm @ 8000 rpm. That would put the chip loading at .003 - .006. Type of material should also be considered.

Assuming melamine material, and you aren't cutting very deep, I'd try chipload of 0.004, so spin the tool at 12500 @100ipm.

Thank you very much for all the information,
the grove only 1/4 deep, material is 1/2 melamine.
yes i will change the plunge depth to .125 and rpm to 12500, feed rate 90. and will see.
Thank you .

You will have better luck if the cut length is only 0.5" as well. There will be less deflection, which can contribute to bit breakage. I have some 1/8" bits with long cut lengths for soft plastic, but would not be a good choice for particle board where only .25" of cut length is required.

Ramping in, makes all the difference, in the world, with 1/8 tool .25 cut no problem.

for a 2 flute tool at 20,000 RPM's, the feed rate should be 120 IPM for a .250 depth of cut. If it's a single flute tool, reduce the feed rate by half. Both scenarios will give you a .004" chip load. If the tool breaks at those speeds, maybe it's tome to find a different tool.
Cheers,
Zak
