Auto tool measure and large fly cutters

3/19/16

Hi guys,

I'm new to cnc, so any help is appreciated. I need to purchase a larger fly cutter and I'm just curious as to how you go about auto tool measuring them. It looks like most have the inserts towards the outside of the body. It looks like the switch would only touch the body of the bit, not the cutting edge of the knife. That said, one of the bits I've come across has two inserts under the body, two on the outer edge. This seems like it would touch the switch.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Not sure what kind of machine you have, buy my machine runs a touch off program that looks to the radius value in the offset registry in order to touch off the tool. In the case of my fly cutter, the radius value is 2.0 inches. As the table and touch probe moves under the spindle, it offsets the value in the registry and the insert hits center of the probe. Many tools aren't bottom cutters, so I would be surprised if your machine didn't account for that.

Probably would depend on the machine but we just move the touch off device to where it will contact the insert.

Wincnc is what we will use for our control. I'll have to check if I can set up a tool radius offset.

Our tool measure switch is mounted on our tool rack. I'm not sure if we can move it. I'll have to check when I'm back in the shop on monday.

Thanks for the input guys!

Alternatively, you can always touch it off the table, just like in the old days before fancy touch probes. If unsure of the procedure, you should learn it. Sometimes the probes break, or malfunction. This way you have a backup that won't keep you from running.

If you move the Wincnc probe you will be re setting macro parameters, do not do this..The probe is most likely set for the other 99.8 % of the bits you will use for center of bit

I am gonna presume you have an ATC because with wincnc you will always set table top z zero using the table.

I still use a 1.25-1.5 mortise bit takes a few more minutes to machine the flycut But hey...

To top set a bit with wincnc

When ready to set z zero lower the bit to an 1/8th above table top, then the tap lightly the "page down key" (if you are using keyboard) and or pendant if you have one,
slide a piece of copy paper under the bit. slide the paper back and forth til you feel resistance, then one more fast small tap. type in G92z0 or use the screen icon for "set z zero" if you have one.

With what ever machine you purchased you saved a good 6-10 k in cost. that said the heavier industrial controllers have their place, features and cost. for me I started using wincnc machines in 08 and have owned 6 since and have 2 now.

Wincnc is a excellent and stable controller there are a few nuances and this is one for the cost I am willing to live with it.

on the other hand it is fully capable of all kinds of stuff, my best guess is a Macro can be edited to do this offset. most manufacturers who use it will refer you to WINcnc directly for this as it is a control item. I do know some who can do this.

I didn't even think of top setting the bit. Perfect! Wincnc seems like a very user friendly controller. I'm sure we'll be happy with it. I did stumble onto some info about tool diameter compensation. I'll wait til I've got the basics down before I mess with that.

James, I remember watching your wincnc tutorial videos when we first decided to make this jump to cnc. Very helpful! I just started re-watching them a few days ago to get the thought processes down. Thanks for all the hard work that you've put into them.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
