Rubber gasket
7/26/17
Hi All
I usually do sheet goods so I'm a little out of my depth here.
I need to make a fixture with an O ring to hold some parts down. The rubber I have is 8mm diameter. What width and depth groove should I use for the rubber gasket?
Thanks.

I typically use 1/8" x 1/4" gasket material without adhesive. I cut a 1/8" x 3/16" deep groove inside my part perimeter to put the gasket in. inside the gasket is a 1/8" deep vacuum Pocket and at least one hole to access vacuum. All Star Adhesives is where I get my material. They advertise here, so it should be easy to find. We do about 30% of our work cutting solids rather than sheets, so I've made hundreds of fixtures over the years.

The gasket just needs to be proud of the surface of the jig, but not so much that it won't compress completely into the channel when the vacuum is applied. 1-1.5mm above fixture will work.

Undercutting end mills work great for round seal trough - you will have to drill a pilot hole at teh start point of the profile to get the end mill to depth

Allstar is a good place for gasket, it's pretty cheap.
