hi guys,

im looking for some input on CNC tool presetter.
what brands/models you guys use?

We don’t use a presetter. We have a test program for each tool that cuts 6mm from the table. We cut measure and adjust. You can get really tight with this technique.

I am interested to hear what others do.

I use a much older version than they make now, but I recommend Fowler highly. They happen to have their headquarters near my shop. Stopped in one day after damaging the instrument, and a tech had it back up and running in 10 minutes no charge. I use an old version of the 54-174-212-3 on a granite surface plate built into a cabinet next to to the CNC. I open a door and the surface plate is in a drawer on Accuride slides out of the dust and commotion. Mine has been in daily use for 15 years, perfect accuracy.

We use a hybrid technique between the two of you. Attached is a picture of our station. We use an inexpensive Wixey digital height gauge, and a laminate workstation to get the job done, then verify the settings with a test cut like Bill above. We also dial in the diameter with the same test cut. We find it to be quick and accurate.

Dial in diameter means that no .500" tool is truly .500" in cut width. Even Vortex tools run under due to it starting with a .500" blank.

By making passes with the tool the actual diameter can be measured and adjusted for.

I used to get fussy trying to get my lengths perfect with a caliper setup like the photo above, but find 'close' with a tape measure is close enough... since I end up running a test cut anyway and adjusting that with a digital caliper.

Yes, what Steve said is accurate.

The important thing is that you have a system that works for you.

We have another method I forgot to mention...Our Weeke Vantech has an auto touch off feature. So, for most bits, we can just use a tape measure as a rough estimate, and let it pick up and measure the tool. It's a nice feature, but the most accurate is running a test, then tweaking it from there.

This post prompted me to buy the tool setter in the link.

I set 5 tools this morning and ran a tool test after to make sure I understood what was happening.

The tool tests measured

.01
.02
.02
.03mm off or .00182" at worst.

That is as good as we could get with (potentially) multiple cycles of test cuts. The benefit is the machine can be running while new/sharpened tools are being set up.

My Biesse has the touch off pad. Previous machine didn't. On our 1/2" bits we run an insert below the tool so that the installed height is always the same. On old machine we could dial in with 1 test pass.
