I have the opportunity to pick up an unused Masterwood "Speedy 207" for next to nothing. It is essentially a compact P2P boring/milling center from the "turn of the century". The owner never figured it out, so it never ran and has been collecting dust in a dry shop ever since.

I've got some time to tinker with it, does anyone have experience with one of these relics?

Dont have experience on this machine, but depending on what you are doing and how much time you are willing to invest learning it, it can prove to be a useful machine once you get it setup.
So, you got the space, money and time but no reeeal need? Just go for it i say.

Check first that it works tho, a control replacement could get costly.

Remember that you are not limited by the cam system in the machine, but most propably can upload code from an external cam, which, depending on what you want to do with it might be a must.

It appears it can import ISO g-code. The trick might be getting the code from the desktop computer to the machine, not sure but I think the Speedy has a floppy disk drive (google it if you're younger than 25). I just checked on Amazon, lo and behold, somebody still makes a USB floppy drive! 1.44 MB power!

Yeah, there is even this kinda devices that you can transfer via network to a floppydrive.

Would this be your first cnc? What kinda work would you be expecting to do?

Thanks Jarvis, I might hit you with some questions. Seems like there are a few common error codes.

I have 6 years of experience running and programming CNC routers, and I have some background in troubleshooting electronics. So, unless there's some irreplaceable part, or some serious gremlins in the thing, I should be able to figure it out.

Are there any other parts aside from the spindle that use 3-phase? I'll need to run it off single phase 220, so I'll either need a phase converter or to replace the spindle drive with a single phase VFD.

Vacuum pump is also 3 phase

I have a CNC router that was made in 2000. Not a Masterwood, an AXYZ. Since our router was made, the manufacturer has made three changes to their operating systems. For an upgrade, the cost would be over $15,000. We operate on Windows 98. I have owned this machine it was new.

In 2014, our computer went down. Original computer. Fortunately I have a computer wizard that works for me. He found parts to rebuild the computer and we were back up in about 10 days. The terminology and computer knowledge necessary to do this, I don't understand.

I viewed a YouTube video of this P2P. I would not buy it even if it was next to free. P2P machines like this one are a waste of time. Check out new or newer machines, they can do so much more.

Thoroughly read through the manual for the VFD. Many frequency drives have the ability to input both single phase and three phase.

I currently own a Speedy 207. I don't currently run it as it's our back up machine to a 2014 SCM Cyflex BR900 vertical PTP machine.

The Speedy does not import G code. You can program it right at the machine, or on a desktop using their software.

It's a boring machine and grooving only. If you're doing basic cabinets and butt joints it's a great machine.

Making a program is simple, you pick a picture of the type of boring you want to do (such as single hole or line bore or groove), and enter the coordinates.

If we decide to sell ours I think the most we could get is about $2500.

My only concern is that Masterwood can't seem to keep us US parts distributor. I'm not sure who sells parts now.

A machine that only does boring is, well, too boring. I'll be removing the control system and the machine head so I can retrofit a spindle and a 3-axis control. I'll probably remove the servo motors and go to a simple stepper control, unless I can find an economical controller that will run the servos.

The machine has 6 hours on the counter, if anybody is interested in any parts please email me. Otherwise watch for them on eBay. I'm going to wire it up this weekend to verify that everything works.
