I have several customer's using the Aerotech System that love it. Like all tooling options though - whether or not it is a good fit for you and your shop depends on many factors.
In our experience it seems to work better with melamine and MDF than plywood. In melamine with a 3/8" compression bit I have a customer that uses the aerotech daily that has increased tool life from a comparable 3/8" compression bit by over 25%. However they are essentially just cutting out parts with the aerotech, not complex routing applications. If you are doing multiple tool changes within the same program - you'd need multiple Aerotech units to use the Aerotech for the whole program. My customer's set up their aerotech for their most common use and utilize traditional tool holders for other applications. However their most common use typically accounts for well over 50% of their routing.
Initially their is some upfront investment in the aerotech unit and the bit holders. However the bit holders are reusable after the bits are sharpened past their useful life, so this is only an upfront cost.
Sharpening is also a consideration - not every shop is set up to sharpen these tools so they either need to be sent back to FS Tool or another shop like mine, Connecticut Saw & Tool, that is properly equipped with specific fixtures, machines and tooling to sharpen the Aerotech bits.
My opinion is that the Aerotech unit definitely does what it is advertised to do - it creates a cleaner environment for workers, gives a fantastic cut, and increases tool life due to keeping the tool cooler. Efficiency can be picked up if you or your workers waste time clearing chips and dust off the table.
