I don't know how to search for information about how many cubes a 7-1/2 Hp Torit cyclone supposedly draws. Nordfab's ductwork site says... no, I infer from it, that a 10" inlet ( the Torit intake size) is designed to handle 2,500 cubic feet per minute. Can anyone direct me where to look for what I obviously don't know?

Actually, I don't have much luck searching this site on any topic. I think it has to do with improperly guessing the magic words. Does anyone have any tips how to search Woodweb?

What is the relationship between static pressure and cfm?

Is there any merit in retrofitting an old 12/14 table saw that has a 4" cabinet dust port with a 5 or 6" dust port?

In posting these questions, should these be separate topics?

Here is a link that will answer some of your questions. The 7.5 HP is a model 24.

Static pressure is inversely proportional to flow rate.

Yes, you will get better dust collection on an old saw if you upgrade to a larger port and duct.

The 7-1/2hp Torit is rated 1950 - 3500 cfm's at a static pressure of 13.4 - 4.4 and an inlet velocity of 3580 - 6450 fpm based on clean filters. I can't help you much with the techno lingo, but I can tell you it will suck your skivvies off if you get too close:>0

Seriously though this collector moves a LOT of air. I have my system set up so the 8" line to my table saws is un-gated. The rest of the machines have gates and I can easily run 2 other machines without any apparent loss in performance.

I think 4" is too small for most machines. My table saws have 5" on the bottom with an additional 3" at the guard. Planer and jointer both have 6", and the shapers have a 6" main that downsizes a bit at the transition to the hood.

hope this helps,

Thanks, guys. You've confirmed my suspicions and I really need to get dust collection right in this new shop. I'll figure on re-porting my old machines and using larger duct than the factory ports suggest is appropriate.

My lungs are shot. A few minutes breathing wood flour makes me sick like the flu for several days. Pay attention, young puppies, dust damage to your lungs isn't an just an inconvenience you can attend to with a handkerchief or by snorting water in the shower.

This morning I've got a line on used Nordfab ducting and have to provide a material list to the owners. This stuff is about as good as it gets but it is too costly for the typical small shop. I need to get the design close as I can and I'd ask a Nordfab rep for a design but that doesn't seem right since I intend to buy used.

I've got a 40 year old Ramco 24" single head wide belt with a 6" port. I'm trying to design for future. Does anyone know what dust porting is typical of double-head 36" wide belts"?

Mark, Please see PDF attachments. One is somewhat of an explanation pertaining to static pressure or resistance to flow. Other is Torit Model 24 sheet that gives CFM delivery at 4 different levels of resistance. A typical external static pressure when a Model 24 is plumbed into a shop with approx 50' main line and branches running off main no more than lets say 10 to 15 feet, would be around the 10" level. The 2,460 delivered would divvy up between open branches. 3, 5" diameter branches at 550 CFM each and 2, 4" diameter branches at 350 CFM each totals 2,350 CFM. That is just one example of a combination of diameters and coinciding volumes that is close to the total CFM delivery. I hope this info helps.

Price both types of ducting out....spiral and Norfab. Brand new the spiral is cheaper but buying used you may do better. Also keep on the lookout for regular spiral from shops closing. I bought a trailer full of ducting for next to nothing a couple years back. I kept about half that was usable and scrapped the rest. If only I had found it before I did the bulk of my system!

Double 36" sander is probably anywhere from 4ea x 4" ports to 2ea x 6" ports, depending on manufacturer. Depending on options like air jet belt cleaners or panel cleaning brush, there may be additional ports.

FORUM GUIDELINES: Please review the guidelines below before posting at WOODWEB's Interactive Message Boards (return to top)

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
