Interesting article, thanks for sharing Mel! I found it particularly interesting that most "bullying" comes from bosses, that hit a cord with me because I have to agree that 90% of the time I feel I have been bullied in the workplace it has been from a "boss".

I had one "boss" who almost always started his bullying by saying "I don't know why everyone thinks you're so great ..." and then he'd give some reason why I wasn't living up to his expectations (even though I consistently hit 100% of my goals). It absolutely drove him crazy that my direct reports liked working for me, and as he put it, "they would follow you right off a cliff". When I said that is called "good leadership" he replied "That's only because you DO EVERYTHING for them!" I laughed and he must have realized how stupid that made him sound (I had twelve direct reports and 25 indirect reports at the time).

In my many years of experience, I have consistently found that the more insecure a person is, the more likely they are to bully others. The boss I talked about above told me time after time that I needed to "get mean" to be a great leader. That people only respect bosses who threaten and intimidate them.

I will tell you my "secret" to being a good boss though. In my past, I have had some of the worst bosses ever. And every time they "crapped" on me, I would say to myself, "If I am ever in that situation, I will NEVER treat someone the way they treated me!" And I have lived by those words.

John, the world can always use more of your type of thinking, for sure.

I'd love to see a chapter on "the art of scaring your employees silly" in an intro to management textbook. Special appendix on how to create an atmosphere conductive to anxiety--increases production, right?

I'd say nobody should do it because it's a nasty thing to do. But it's also completely inneffective. Stressed out people don't think well. Probably a self-perpetuating cycle--you scream at people for mistakes, they get nervous, make more mistakes, you scream more, etc.

I've moved to using the knit gloves with the tough plastic palms. They fit well, are tougher than leather and I would think they would dry much faster than leather. to check smother gloves over https://www.safetydirect.ie/627/Knitted.aspx Here are the gloves I got from SHOWA Best, and it's up to someone else to figure out the type of Cotton.
