How much should a dust collection system cost?10/15
Hello all. I am looking for some feedback on what similar sized businesses have invested in their dust collection system.
We are a small shop with 5 cabinetmakers and we are about to move in to a new 5000 sq. ft. shop. During a recent fire inspection at our existing shop the inspector told us that we would require an engineered dust collection system.
We have hired an engineer and they have recommended a system that draws 12,000 cfm. This is above our current requirements but we want to be able to add a cnc router within a year or two.
The system that they are designing needs to comply with the BC Fire Code and NFPA 664 with regards to spark detection, explosion venting and electrical interlocking etc..
The cost of the system that the engineer is recommending is looking like it will cost 150k plus to install and that is without return air.
I am the operations manager at my company and I am gathering information for the owner to review.
It would be great to hear from anyone that has installed a new system recently and what it cost. Thanks for your help.
I just went through this earlier this year. Here's what I did.
I brought in 3 dust collectors and kept them all under 5000 cfm which kept me below the threshold of triggering all those requirements.
Running them in zones like that is also saving me electricity.
I have 2 20hp units and 1 10hp unit. There are times when I only need to run the 10hp unit for the machines running in that area.
Why have 50 hp when at times you only need 10? Then there are times when all 3 are running.
You may have an inspector that won't buy into that, but the fire marshall in my area didn't raise an issue with my arrangement when they went through for my inspection.
My housekeeping was perfect and still is, that may have helped me out. They complimented me on our operation.
All 3 units are cyclones with airlocks on them and they are all indoors.
Get the factory requirements for the machines you will have, then how many you will have simultaneously running. Around here collectors inside that are of much size are objected to. We have two, both outside. One for the solid wood area & one for the panel processing area. By keeping them separate we can sell the wood chips for animal bedding and avoid the disposal coasts. The other one has to go to the dump. Make sure you use a system that puts it directly into a trailer or dumpster so you don't have additional labor costs. If you are in a cold climate, return air and a silencer is a must. Dumping 12,000 cfm of heated air would cost a fortune.
For me a line less than 10" in diameter isn't regulated. I have a 5hp for the beam saw, bander and cnc. A 10p for the molder, sander, table saw and several shapers. A 5hp for the rip saw and planer and a 3hp for the jointer and chop saw. Not perfect but works. A 150K for a 5 man shop, might be nice but I'd balk.
