Dust Collector Sucking up conveyor belt

We have a two head 52 inch timesavers widebelt sander. We cannot sand ¾” thick material because the dust collector will suck the conveyor belt into sanding heads and sand down the conveyor belt. We have tried to cut the suction down by having the 10” blast gate only open half way. Still has not worked.
Should we move the sander away further from the dust collector? Any other suggestions?

Hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in but it sounds like a belt problem not a dust collector problem.

Is the tension on the belt correct? Are you sure it is the suction of the collector or is it the belt binding and bunching up?

Just sounds odd, the amount of suction needed to pick up a rubber belt is tremendous. Run it without the collector on and see if you have the same problem.

have you tried calling Timesavers?
certainly sounds like the belt has too much slack in it.
Have you tried it with all of the dust ports to your other machines open at same time?
how big is your dust collector? Contact Air handling systems company> They advertise on this page.
They can advise you on CFM and duct sizing for your machine.

with the belt not moving can you see the vacuum lifting up the belt?
If the belt has that much slack in it I'm suprised it is not slipping like crazy,
never had that problem with my 3 head SCMI machine

Thanks for all the feedback and suggestions. We have had this problem for quite some time the 1st conveyor-belt we bought directly from time savers and we had the same issue. We purchased the 2nd belt from another supplier due to the belt from timesavers being sucked up into the sanding belts and due to cost.We have spoken to technical service at time savers and have not been able to provide us much assistance. We have tried adjusting and fighting the belt. The belt is actually pretty tight. I will try to take a picture or video of the belt getting sucked up when we don't have the conveyor on. I am out of the shop right now.

Drill one billion holes in the belt to make it porous. Shouldn't get sucked up if air can pass through it.

Timesavers is on the hook to provide your solution, are they not? They may drag their feet, but it is their machine. I hope they sprung for the replacement belt. As I see it, this is not a suction problem as much as it is a responsibility problem for the maker, and a motivation problem for you.

There are many machines like yours in the world - how do they deal with it? Woodweb may have a member that chimes in, but most likely, if they have a similar machine, they don't have the problem.

I would try to drill many 1/4" holes in the platen across its width, under the feed belt and hook up a vacuum pump to see if you can counter the top suction. Or perhaps a gate/diversion system that would take suction off the machine heads and divert an adjustable portion of it to the feed belt. But first, I would do everything I could to get Timesavers to stand behind it. Then I'd get them to do the diversion experiment, or other solutions you propose.

how old is this machine?
seems obvious that you are pulling too much air through your dust collector so i don't understand why it is Timesavers fault.
on my SCMI there are 5" hoses running to the shroud by each belt. The belt is perforated as I run a vacuum pump to hold down small pieces
have you tried opening all the ports to your other machines?
what size are the ports on the top of the sander?
when i was looking for a new machine I sent samples to be sanded to different supppliers.
i sent veneered samples to timesavers.Salesman told me he set up machine then get got called away. When he came back he ran samples without checking and sanded veneer all the way off.
last time i dealt with timesavers.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
