Kremlin/Water Base Primer

1/7/15

Guys,
I have 2 EOS pumps one I run a precat lacquer through with a pail mount agitator and I can leave this idle for days with no issues spin the agitator pop on the tip and cap "spray away"..... The other I use for priming only with a great WB primer from Chemcraft. If I leave the primer in line overnight with the tube in solution and the gun trigger closed the primer solidifies in line. Both Reps have no answer to why ????????

if its single component, the primers usually have a high filler solids that are most likely falling out of suspension., i would flush the lines with water , leave water in it, they start in the am, the pumps don't hold that much fluid, better than losing fluid lines,

if you want to recover a fluid line, reverse the fluid line meaning put the pump end on the gun end and vice versa

i have saved a lot of money doing that, besure to remove the spray gun

good luck

I echo Herb's solution. I spray with a 10-14 pump and MVX gun. I was spraying Valspar's Zenith Universal Amber Primer(H2o) and did not thoroughly clean my fluid hose....the following day, tried to spray, nothing comes out. Thought my pump was broken. No, the primer had completely congealed in the hose.....plugged it up completely. Had to purchase a new fluid hose. Hence, I believe you have to clean with water first, followed by Denatured Alcohol to get the fluid hose clean. Who said spraying waterborne was chemical free!!!

I've had this issue with both Kremlin 10-14 and the newer EOS pumps with the same Chemcraft primer and other water based finishes. It hardens where the fluid line to the gun leaves the side of the pump housing. It has to be the fittings that allow it to harden.

I also spray the primer out of 2 Graco Merkur pumps which are very similar in design to the kremlins with no issues at all.

I plan on buying a 55 gallon pail mount kremlin with an agitator as a built in system but only when they resolve the current issue. It's not the kind of thing you break down every night. The sales rep is working with Kremlin on a solution. My guess is they will copy the GRACO design which has never had an issue.

interesting read, fittings cannot cause a material to harden unless a brass fitting might come in contact with a wb, even a galv fitting wouldn't cause an issue, i might be a dead spot where the pressure of the pump is shearing out the solids, i think what really is happening is the solids are falling out of solution much like the old lacquer days when you had to stir the finish to get the solids back into the material, very interesting that the graco doesn't do it with the same material, again thinking of dead space and sheering

will have to keep checking on this one

Herb,

I was not referring to the composition of the metal fittings but more to the ability of them being air tight. I believe there is a weak point in the fitting that allows air to somehow get to the material. It only happens at the fluid outlet from the pump when the pump is kept under pressure.

The material itself could be sheering but it's hard to say. When you take the fitting off you end up cleaning out a hardened plug. It's identical on the 10/14 and EOS except it seems to even be a little worse on the EOS fittings. The material seems to harden further down the line.

I wonder if anyone has had this problem with any other pumps other then the Kremlin?? Binks, Falcon Etc.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
