Cheap Airless Rig Finish Quality

I'm tired of killing myself trying to spray latex with HVLP.

A lot of the entertainment units and bookcases I do require a color matched to the house trim and while ideally I'd like to use lacquer I can't find a supplier around me that will tint their white so I typically use SW Pro Classic Acrylic Latex. I'm using a DeVilbiss Finishline 4 gravity fed gun with hvlp air cap and 2.2 nozzle to spray this, and thinned out some it sprays okay but is painfully slow.

On a tight budget, I'd like to upgrade my setup to AAA and was thinking about the Graco Finish Pro 295, but read a lot of archived threads advising the use of a cheap airless for latex so I'm considering buying an airless as well for the latex application.

At Harbor Freight there is a $200 5/8 HP airless rig from Krause & Becker. It says it has a No. 517 nozzle and 12" - 16" fan pattern. I have no experience with airless and don't know what the nozzle size numbers mean or if this one will provide a fine finish.

Anyone have any experience with this sprayer or think it would provide a decent finish? My priorities are in order as follows: finish quality, speed, overspray, transfer efficiency, though I'd like to balance it all out pretty well.

Also, I'd like to hear any experience with Graco AAA for clears.

Lastly, how the heck do you shoot the edges of things like doors and shelves with a 12" fan pattern without wasting a ton of paint? Do the edges just get hit while you're spraying the top? With my current set up I put doors and shelves on a turntable, hit all four edges with the smallest pattern on my gun, crank the pattern up some and spray the top. Thanks for any advice given.

here is what i would do

go to home depot and get a titan or graco unit, about 1/3 gpm the standard reversible tip of 517 is too big

get a fine finish tip, it will be noted on the package, if you are spraying narrow parts get something like a 213 or 215 tip,

for standard doors, get a 413 and 415double the first number gives you the approx fan pattern size

i would get a strainer bag about sixty mesh and stir up the latex first get it mixed well

they also make a dual fan pattern twist tip, titan calls them tr2 tips

either graco or titan imho are equal in quality

the fine finish tip will help you get a better finish for a latex product

good luck

Google Titan ED655 Plus. $699 plus shipping. No thinning on Muralo or BM, haven't tried
it with SW pro classic but it will probably be the same. I use the 310 or 412 fine finish tip. It comes
with 50 foot hose, I ordered separate 15 foot hose but it cost $50. Less cleanup with the shorter hose.
Because it's a diaphragm pump instead of a piston pump the shorter hoses work fine.
I bought mine at local SW store for $599 because of special sale Titan was having.
This will be a game changer for you.
Spray edges with the width of spray pattern. So 30" shelf edge gets done in 3 quick passes
going against grain not with it.

Thanks guys for the recommendations. I have already been checking out the Graco rigs and will check out the Titan also.

Thanks Al, I understand now how to go about spraying edges with such a wide fan.

Just had to add this regarding Cheap Pumps. Last year in a grocery store parking lot a guy noticed I was a Painter(don't know how?) and asked me if I wanted to buy a "Sprayer" he did not need anymore. It was a Graco Project Painter which had what it did a year ago at LOWES. I paid $35.00 cash and use that little "Cheap Pump" all the time for quick jobs in shop and on site. Cleans fast, pushes a small tip good and primes with a Cup of material

Thanks I had to share that Rick M

Does that ED655 have wink like some airless pumps? It does look interesting, I have a Binks AA4000 gun I could use with it too.

No wink that I know of that's why the shorter hose works. Plus the hopper is excellent. An extra hopper
is under $50, I have one for paint and one for clears.

I love those little Wagner/Titan diaphragm pumps...I've been spraying finishes out of those pumps for over 40 years! Add a AAA gun capable of 3,000psi, a little compressor, air line and some air/moisture filters and you have a portable AAA set-up for 1/3 to 1/2 the price of a Graco portable AAAs

Nick,

If I understand correctly, I could buy the Harbor Freight airless rig for the pump, use my existing shop compressor, buy a Kremlin Excite gun, run an airline from my compressor to the gun and that would all work as an AAA unit?

Not that I would necessarily use that combination of brands, but hypothetically speaking? Is the pump just as important to the finish quality as the gun? Thanks.

not exactly, you need to get that pump to be able to adjust to about 500 600 psi, that is optimum for using an air assisted airless gun, more than that pressure, you are wasting a lot of paint

interesting thread......I just purchased a graco 390 for painting latex on and off site.....seems to do a good job.... I have had a Kremlin for the last 10 years and I love that gun , but I will only use lacquer thru that system.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
