I do that sort of thing all the time with waterborne products and while I have 2 different AAA units,I prefer to use the turbine and Accuspray 10 GP gun for jobs like this. You get faster change overs, less waste, better control of the fan pattern and a flawless finish.

In that video they are throwing way too much product at the doors per pass and are not getting the color as even as I like.

Turbine vs airless. Your turbine is much more forgiving that airless......

Pot and gun will be more versatile, giving you more control then a pump when performing other tasks like staining, dyeing, shading/toning as well as applying finish coats. A good 2 gallon pot and gun can be had for less than 1/2 money...that is, if you have the compressor to power it all. if you don't a compressor a 4 or 5 stage turbine at half the money of a 10-18 will get your job done as well. Apollo (I believe they're owned by Kremlin) makes a very large selection of turbine models.
I have a Graco 9.0 with the added compressor and it does a great job of spraying dyes, stains and finishes.

If somebody did that to my oak doors I'd shoot em. That is a conventional airless in the video not an air assisted airless and I wouldn't copy anything they are doing.

I've never seen anyone spray a door in that pattern? Also would not be thrilled with the blotchiness of the finished product. I agree with Rick….looks pretty amateurish.

As far as the Kremlin goes it's not so much overkill as maybe not the best tool for your situation. Don't get me wrong, AAA setups are awesome for spraying. I just don't know if it's ideal for learning how to spray? They put out a LOT of finish very quickly. If you don't have previous experience spraying your going to need to plan on spraying a LOT of test pieces to get the hang of it.

Then there's trying to do shading lacquers with them. Again, probably not the best tool for the job. I'd be more inclined to go with a turbine or basic hvlp gun. With shading you want to lay down thin coats of color and have good control. A Kremlin is going to put down a lot of finish fast.

good luck,
JeffD

Ditto what Rick says. I want to know how there was any adhesion by spraying over a freshly wiped glaze. It seems to me you end up with a thin candy coating over a nice runny surface. FWIW Paul, if you are using that video as a primer on how to finish doors and you believe what you're seeing is correct, then save yourself some money and a whole lot of aggravation and out-source it to someone who has experience. A kitchen refinish is not a starter project by any means. Good luck!

A Kremlin Rexson AAA system is the best system you can buy for spraying lacquer. It has a transfer rate that is between 80-90% I believe, with very little over spray, they are a dream to use. I will agree with others that there is a learning curve to get good at using them. As for overkill for your application, I would definitely say yes. They are also expensive like others have mentioned. You would have to also spend time every so often to maintain them as they need to be used so seals don't dry out. You would have to talk to your dealer on how long that would be. The dealer in my area has demos that they let customers use, so maybe look into that option, they also sell the demos every year for less money.

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.

  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
