Screwed by SW vinyl sealer

Hi,

So I use SW Pre-cat laq and couldn't be happier with it. But, they won't sell me an easy sand sanding sealer anymore. So I used the vinyl sealer that was recommended. I sprayed a whole house worth of stain grade trim with the stuff and had a hell of a time sanding it smooth before top coat. I missed some nibs and had to re-sand and re-spray some of it. Why can't I get the easy sand sealer from SW anymore?

im not sure why you would be having a problem with the vinyl sealer. I have been using that for over 10 years with no issues whatsoever. You are talking about T67F6 right?

Im really at a loss. That stuff dries in minutes and sands/powders effortlessly. Try adding 25% lacquer thinner.

I'm not sure of the SW # since I didn't save any. I sprayed it without thinning. We must not be comparing apples to apples because the stuff I used didn't powder at all. It sort of gummed up when sanded. I let it dry overnight.

I'd be willing to bet that what it said on the outside of the can was not what was inside. Screw-ups happen.

We spray both vinyl sealer and T77 un-thinned. Both sand well but the sealer is a bit easier.

maybe you used the F7 which is supposed to be catalyzed with V66V26. Its for their conversion varnish system, and it doesnt sand nearly as well as the F6 precat vinyl. If it gummed up, i can assure you that it was not the F6. I have sprayed thousands and thousands of gallons of it and have never had an issue ( other than the occasional blushing during very high humidity )

Different product from yours I'm sure. But I use and have been using the T67 F7 for years. I either add a little thinner or none. Never a catalyst. It dries fast and sands really well. I like the way it performs.
You didn't add any retarder by mistake did you?

mitch. if your not catalyzing the F7 you cannot use it under conversion varnish. If your using the F7 under precat, your kind of wasting your efforts. The F6 is much better as far as dry time and sandability for use under precat lacquer.
That said, I use a ton of F7 as well. Always catalyzed. Only for conversion varnish. These days we spray primarily conversion varnish and do so in high volume. Our cefla goes thru about 40 gallons a day.

There is simple no comparison to the sandability of the F6 to the F7. They are worlds apart in that aspect. But i will say the durability of the F7 is much better than the F6.

Kevin, thanks for the heads up on that, but we do not spray the pre cat. I was just speaking up mostly about my satisfaction with SW products, usually that is! Plus I was pondering the possibility of the addition of retarder. I find in our paint room, the habit of adding certain ingredients to top coats often causes them to find their way into sealers and primers, where they don't belong.

Thanks for your responses. Maybe they just put the wrong product in the can. Know I know what to ask for specifically.

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
