Fixing dust nibs in opaque finishes
4/7/15
I seem to be unable to spray white cv without something ending up in the final coat. I usually sand and respray, but you can only do that so many times. I try my best to keep a clean booth and shop, but it always happens. Does anyone have a good trick to repair a small dust nib after the finish is dry? Brown paper bag works sometimes, but only on the smallest nibs. Does this happen to anyone else? Thanks.

Try spraying the floor with water to keep down dust made airborne from your footsteps.

I use a nib file. I like the Konig best http://profinisher.blogspot.com/2014/07/samples-part-2.html but the Steck files work well also. http://www.eastwood.com/painters-nib-files-set-of-three.html?reltype=2&parent_

Thanks for the responses. I did try the water method on the last job, and it seemed to help. Rick, after using the nib file, do you do any color touch up, or leave it be? I have a steck file but I'm always afraid I will leave scratches in the surface.

If you just use the weight of the file (that's why I like the Konig best because it is heavier) it won't scratch the surface. I also wait until the next day so it isn't still soft. If the booger is too big it will leave a dull spot which can be touched up with touch up lacquer or if it is too bad then back to the spray gun.

Sometimes I wipe with a "white" scuff
pad. They are suppose to be non abrasive
but work good for something small.
They can be had at an auto paint store.
