Stealth drying problem

I sprayed the first coat of MLC Stealth over Clawlock primer. Used the proper catalyst, at 10%, but after 2 hrs. it is still slightly tacky. Shop was a little cool, around 62 degrees, but I've sprayed at similar temps before with no issue. The cat. is a little old, not sure if there is a shelf life on it or not, but it seemed to work fine with the primer coat. The Stealth is fresh, not sure if I just need to wait longer or what. Anyone see similar issues with Stealth? If I have to throw out this batch I can, but it's a custom color so I can't waste too much without ordering more which doesn't fit the schedule well. I didn't thin this batch either, just cat & stealth. Maybe better to thin a bit?

Don't have a ton of answers, but I was told once by my Campbell rep that the catalyst doesn't really have shelf life. Stealth needs to be reduced, 20-25% with Care Reducer (after cat). Wouldn't think this would affect dry time, but probably best to start there.

Temp has everything to do with cure, of course reduction does as well. Acid cured products cure when the catalyst is added at recommended values. if the temp is lower than "normal this will retard the cure. Try and warm your shop to 70 plus degrees, you will see a difference. this also goes for the drying cycle. Once the product has flashed you should be able to slowly add heat and cure the coating. Heat +air makes a huge difference. Good luck.

Well, I turned up the heat a bit later yesterday, but when I went out to the shop this morning, no change. Everything is still tacky to touch. I'll try my rep as soon as he's in this morning, but it's looking like I'll be stripping off this coat and starting new. I'll be spraying some samples first though. Good thing I started with the backs of the doors first, and only hit two vanities, not all the other cabinets, as they are a different color. Thanks for the input guys.

I would agree, your paint rep should look at this. Sounds like catalyst issue if it is still tacky. Good luck.

Once the catalyst stops working it doesn't start again when you turn up the heat. Just like putting it in the refrigerator to use it the next day. You need to keep the temp above 65 degrees while spraying and curing. Should say that on the PI sheet. If you don't you could also get cold checking.

Talked to rep, he said it did sound like a catalyst issue. I'm grabbing some new, also their reducer, try it thinned 15-20%. I'll keep my fingers crossed!

I have found a pretty good thinning mix to make Stealth work very well. I thin it 25%. I use 15% Reducer and 10% Flow Enhancer #2. It's a perfect finish almost every time. Flows out very well in cooler weather.

Thanks Leo, I'll try that. What equipment are you spraying it with? I'll be using a CA aaa setup, but I'm curious what others prefer.

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
