I am looking for a good gravity hvlp gun to spray pre cat lacquer with. I build mostly furniture and cabinets. I don't do a high volume of spraying would use about 2-3 times a month. Also what tip size would you recommend the product I have been using is valspar pre cat self seal.

I have a Binks M1G that I use on small jobs and don't want to bother flushing lines on my main guns. I really like it, I use either a 1.2 or 1.4 fluid nozzle for most clears. It's not a cheap gun though...

Tell us more....waterborne or solvent, and how big is your shop compressor?

If you want to use something like a Binks Gravity, you will need a compressor producing 10-13 cfm and clean delivery of air.

You can look into turbine unit but I would get at least a 4stage turbine
If you have a compressor there are lots of guns to choose from
If your compressor doesn't put out enough cfm
You can look into low cfm spray guns
I have the Asturo 5008 and the CA tech Jaguare 100
Both uses about 4-6 cfm
I get real good finish
I usually use a 1.8mm for primer and 1.4 - 1.5 for clear/pigmented coating

My compressor is rated at 11.9 cfm and the product is a solvent based.

You could do a lot worse than one of the Qualspray guns. No connection to Jeff Jewitt, just a satisfied customer. He'll give you a specific recommendation based on your needs if you call him.

My favorite gun is my Iwata HVLP400.
It's an expensive gun made in Japan.
I use it to paint cars with.
I use a 1.4 tip.
For less money, the Devilbiss Finisline
series does a great job.

You might want to try 3M's new 'Disposable' Accuspray PPS guns.....the heads are disposable.....have not tried one, but the price is right and it seems to garner good press. Select the 1.4 Nozzle for solvent coatings..1.8 nozzle for waterborne. Lot's of them on ebay/epay!!

Sounds like your compressor may be a little small. I would guess you will be running out of air.

Look into a new compressor along with the gun, or a turbine, or the best option an air assist airless.

Two very good guns that I'm familiar with run at about 10 CFM - the Devilbiss Compact gun with 510 compliant aircap and the CAT CPR compliant gun.

I'm wondering why you're choosing HVLP?

In terms of atomization quality and speed you would do better with a high efficiency gun, aka reduced pressure.

The Devilbiss compact is a great gun but the high efficiency air cap is the way to go. For less money there is the Devilbiss Plus high efficiency gun which comes with 3 fluid tips. Its a heavy gun but does a good job for a great price.

When it comes to conversion hvlp guns the only reason to choose hvlp is if you're in CA or other locale that mandates hvlp.

As for the promise of low overspray and better transfer efficiency, you'll get all that with high efficiency and get better results and move faster, not to mention saving a few bucks.

afinisher - Agree 100%, both the guns I mentioned are HTE not HVLP.

correct Bill. Had my part numbers confused on the compact. 510 is the high efficiency air cap.

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.

  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
