Fiberglass door finishes7/27
I have found woodweb to be a great resource over the last couple years. I was one of my staples in the beginning, we have been in the finishing a few years, we primarily do a ton of window and doors. Some custom wood work and trim.
I have been experimenting with different finishing schedules and products to allow us to provide a larger range of color options, or matching ability's to our customers for the finishing of fiberglass doors.
We have worked with most the gel stains, some standard wiping stains, and multiple seal and top coats options to help with durability. Though I don't like most the results and worry about the long term of these finishes.
I am hoping someone will help steer me in the right direction. Whats working well for you? Whats been a disaster so we can avoid a wasted effort.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Nobody has any input on the topic?
Jeremy, most here apply a coating to wood. In the years Ive participated here on Wood Web I cant recall anyone inquiring about finishing fiberglass. Have you checked the search yet....I may have missed out on that subject.
Most stains we finish over need to absorb into the wood B4 we apply a coating over it. Not sure if a stain would absorb into the fiberglass or just dry on top of it.
What have you experimented with so far.... is there a particular issue your having with your attempts...
Have/are you experimenting with any Automotive coatings or pigments that are used to tint Urethane ...
What you are creating on a fiberglass door is a "FAUX' finish. Gel stains are suitable.
